Blackboard course websites were divided into categories based on the level of staff participation. High staff participation courses (n=678) were those in which course staff had greater than 3000 hits on the course site during the term.
Students in these courses were then divided into groups based on final grade (HD - high distinction is the highest grade, F - fail is the lowest).
For each of these student groups the average number of posts (starting a new discussion thread) and replies (responding to an existing discussion thread) were calculated. (# of posts is always - so far - been lower than # of replies)
Normally there is a trend associated with grade. The higher the grade, the high the number of posts and replies.
This trend is there for high staff participation courses.
