*Mmmm* Two very happy women here :) This was the third kiss we gave each other at Cloud Nine (this time our lips actually matched up!) Because of first life commitments, Trinity and I celebrated Valentines Day yesterday.

More on our digs, the Kawayan Resort, and our warm and gracious surf-addict host, David Frachou. The resort is not on beachfront property, but is just across Cloud Nine. I later realized the wisdom of its location during the international Siargao Cup, where everyone would be camped out on the beach, boozing and tripping; the Kawayan would be a secret hideaway but really only just a stone’s throw from all the action. There are only two cottages in the Kawayan, each with a/c, a veranda, a four-post bed, a sofa bed, and – get this – an outdoor jungle bath with a rainforest shower. I took my first shower while it was actually raining, so the cool rain drops mixed with the warm bath was like a dream. I’m usually a shower-lather-rinse type of guy, but I didn’t want to get out of the bathroom too quickly that time. The latter is a thirty-something surfer-chef from the South of France (you just know the food is going to be awesome) who found Siargao and fell in love with its candy bar.

Over dinner, he told us a French friend of his was coming to take over the kitchen service so that he could have more free time. I asked, “You need more free time? In an island with seasonal tourists and zero malls? To do what, exactly?”

“Surf.” He waved off my incredulity with a smile. I was shocked even more when he spoke fluent Tagalog to the surf instructor he recommended us. The Spanish came for the spices in the 16th century, the Japanese came for the strategic military supply location in the 20th century. In the 21st century, the French are coming to conquer our waves, one surf break at a time.

Late last night Willow and ZenZen touched noses for first time. Tam and I were watching - holding our breath.

Finally we are reaching closer to the top list of Shanghai 777-777, and it's time to reveal the third runner up. Yes, the iconic headboard says it all. It's the Grand Hyatt Shanghai, the first Grand Hyatt that opened in Shanghai in 1999, until the second Grand Hyatt opened in 2007 as the Hyatt on the Bund.

When I first stayed at the hotel back in 2005, it instantly became my #1 favourite hotel because it was literally breathtaking. The lofty location 55 storeys above the ground; the breathtaking river view; the spectacular 30 storey atrium; the iconic building; and the beautifully designed guest rooms were unprecedented at the time of opening. It set a new benchmark for the Shanghainese hospitality scene and quickly garnered worldwide attention and international cult followers.

A decade has passed and after several stays at the hotel, I still felt the awe upon returning to the hotel recently. As a designer, Jean Philippe-Heitz, hits the right notes when he married Art Deco style amidst contemporary surrounding. Despite showing signs of wear and tear, the guest rooms still managed to look quite relevant and timeless to this day..

Sure, it is not the tallest and highest hotel anymore, -sister Park Hyatt has beaten it-; it is not the most luxurious, -again, sister Park Hyatt reigns supreme-; nor it has the best service (this is an area that has never improved since the beginning).. but still, there is a certain charm and novelty when you stay at the Grand Hyatt. For me, it comes back to the root (design) and it has always caught my attention from the start...

So, It's very easy to see who's the top 3 now, it's the epic battle between The Trio P: The Puli, The Park Hyatt and The Peninsula. Who reigns supreme.. More to come.

Cloud is an Arabian gelding available for adoption from Horse Rescue United. He had a BIG day today- he rode in the Assunpink for the first time and we did a short photo session. This horse has such a nice mind. He loaded and unloaded from the trailer like a pro, and stood quietly while he was tacked up and braided. For those who are unfamiliar with the Assunpink, there are some open fields and dirt roads by the parking lot. He was all by himself with no other horses, and he handled the whole ride really well, under the expert guidance of Christina Henderson. He saw a rabbit, heard the hounds at the hunt club, and saw cars driving past the park, and took it all in stride. Nothing spooked him, and he kept a flat-footed walk to and from the trailer- it was a very new experience for him, and he was tense but he was willing and honest. Christina reports that he has some nice education under saddle. He has a soft mouth, balances himself naturally up and down hills, understands lateral cues, and readily responds to leg and seat. He's very handsome! I can picture him being just as dapper under western tack as in an English saddle and bridle. He takes up a lot of leg and is surefooted over rocks and up and down hills. For those who remember him from last year, he was named "Bugsy" and was part of a neglect case in Atlantic County. You can contact the rescue for more information. If you're not ready to adopt, there are many volunteer positions available at HRU, from day-to-day care like feeding to assistance with fundraisers. Contact www.horserescueunited.org/

“To find the universal elements enough;

to find the air and the water exhilarating;

to be refreshed by a morning walk

or an evening saunter;

to be thrilled by the stars at night;

to be elated over a bird's nest

or a wildflower in spring

- these are some of the rewards of the simple life.“

I definitely think there’s plenty of room in the international surfing scene for Filipinos. Being blessed with so many awesome surf spots like Cloud Nine, San Juan, and Baler, not to mention a gazillion others waiting to be found in our seven thousand-strong islands, it’s just a matter of marooning each kid with surfing potential to his own surf island, with care packages of board wax and Cloud Nine candy bars (for all the “promise-this-is-the-last-for-the-day” rides) being airdropped in regularly, to seal our future global domination in surfing. A local Surigaonon beat out foreign competition to bag the Siargao Cup last year. Interestingly enough, I think it’s going to be a true local gal or guy (Pilar or Juan, if you will), one who was born in a seaside town with beaches for playgrounds and surfboards for seesaws, who will surprise the rest of us soon. Mark my words with some of that pineapple-cherry-flavored board wax. (Speaking of which, I seriously think board wax could be the next big social enterprise product. Mango-flavored wax, anyone?)

Siargao, you are that simple surfing island I’ve been looking for. I will see you soon.

Welcome amenities at the Grand Hyatt. Consistent with the whole decor, the designers have carefully selected items with reference to local culture and history, which in Shanghai terms means Art Deco and Chinese tradition. Grand Hyatt Shanghai marries both perfectly and that concept has proven to stay modern, relevant and of timeless beauty until today.

George loved to play music and sing in the bath. But he always played it safe. Guitar unplugged. Bath unplumbed. Verrrry little chance of electrocution that way.

This was locally described as the path Alexander Selkirk took to his look-out point. There are also commemorative plaques on the island despite Alexander Selkirk Island being some miles to the West (it is very difficult to land on so not a good tourist lure).
