Cloudless Sulphur, Cape May Point S.P., Cape May Co., NJ

The Gall Wasp is a parasite which deposits its eggs inside a growing acorn. The oak responds to the "attack" by producing the gall, which makes a lovely home for the wasp larvae.

I'm no expert, but based on an old book I have lying around I think this might be the gall of "Andricus Quercuscalicis". It's known as a "Knopper Gall". If you know better then let me know - thanks! :-)

The colours really were this saturated, by the way. The sun was low and strong in a cloudless sky - just starting to turn golden.

We are seeing a lot of cloudless sulphurs migrating through now.

It is surprising how often the lake is free of boats, or has just one or two. I thought these lone fishermen added a lot to the sense of serenity here---Lake Guntersville late on an October afternoon

A cloudless frosty night on the first of March meant a very bright crescent moon was visible over our way, so I decided what I really wanted to do in spite of the cold was have a bash at getting out there and photographing it.

I'm quite pleased with how this turned out, but it did reinforce that what I really want is a lens with even more poke than the 18-200 ;)

These are about all that I've been seeing lately...no Monarchs, Spicebushes, Tigers or Gulfs. I have spotted a few Buckeyes and many Skippers. Photographed in the Dixon Gardens, Memphis, Tennessee.

If ever I had a doubt, today provided confirmation...these critters are really difficult to photograph well. Or maybe I'm just lame. I ain't tellin' how many exposures it took me to get to this. --MIchael

This cloudless sulphur, or phoebis sennae, reminded me of the white cabbage butterflies I used to see in Asia in my childhood, but much larger. They are more common in the warmer parts of the Americas so I guess I was lucky to see one here in the Carolinas. I later found out that the one in this photo was likely a female due to its greenish tinge and the spots on the wings.

Watching a cloudless, winter sunset over the city. There was some haze down in the valley. Pic taken from around San Jose, CA from up at The Point Church. Happy Friday, guys! (Friday around sunset, January 30, 2015; 5:10 p.m.)

*Weather update:

Is there still hope for rain this rainy season? We are watching for the potential of a more significant storm approaching the state near the end of next week. We could be looking at an atmospheric river (Pineapple Express) setting up over Northern California giving us some much needed rain. However, since the moisture will be coming from the sub-tropics, this was to be a warm storm, with snow levels expected to be above 7000 feet. Though it's a bit early to forecast the rain, we could still see some significant rain by the end of next week. Keep your fingers crossed!

A rare cloudless midnight is so irresistible for a star trails shot, despite that I was on a sleeping debt.

Stacked from 365*20s, that's 2+ hours of mechanically clicking the remote shuttle release button. Not much of fun, though.

The result is some what OK. I have no idea what's caused the wave-like pattern in the middle of trails. I suppose that I might have pressed the blower too hard when blowing the camera during shooting.

DUSTED

It was cloudless today and I was hoping to get the moonrise. But I saw what I thought was a dust cloud and shot that instead. When I reviewed the photo I saw the light on the mid-left and realized it was probably a truck that created the dust.

City of Hope National Home Furnishings Industry

June 9, 2014 West Coast Golf & Tennis Tournament

Honoring George Tsai and Jason Liu, Fairmont Designs

On a fabulous June afternoon at Coto de Caza Country Club in Southern California, hundreds of Furniture Industry executives enjoyed a very successful City of Hope Golf & Tennis Tournament and dinner honoring George Tsai and Jason Liu of Fairmont Designs. These pioneering executives were awarded the National Home Furnishings Industry’s Lifetime Achievement Award, as their peers gathered at the Industry’s premier philanthropic event in the West.

Both Coto golf courses were filled with foursomes having a great day in cloudless California weather. Attendees came from all over the United States, and City of Hope ultimately raised over $1,200,000 through the generosity of participants and sponsors. George Tsai, Chairman of Fairmont Designs, and Jason Liu, Chief Executive Officer, were accompanied by their wives and expressed their admiration for the work of City of Hope and how honored they were to be selected for this award in 2014.

During a hearfelt presentation, City of Hope patient speaker, Melissa Shaw, shared her journey of hope after discovering she had type 1 diabetes. Melissa, who suffered temporary blindness, spoke of her treatment and recovery at City of Hope. Melissa who is also a Fairmont Design employee, was accompanied by her husband.

I used a 300mm lens - it came out pretty good.
