An unidentified RAF Airbus A330 Voyager departs Brize Norton on a tanking mission. August 2013.

This is a panorama of 3 shots stitched together, taken at 40,000' around 20W over the atlantic. The sun was just coming up, which gave the orange glow on the horizon.

These are a reasonably rare sight.

For more information on noctilucent clouds, look here.

This picture comes from my last business travel - to Singapore.

I arrived there too late for sightseeing that day but at least I had some spectacular views of sunset from my window.

More pictures to come :-)

Just had to get a shot, from the driving car.

Taken just after the sun had set over the mountains. this optical phenomenon was a fleeting lovely vision that lasted for a few minutes only. It is caused by the sun below the horizon casting a shadow onto the clouds.

I was totally bewitched; I've never seen anything like it before.

The central peak casting the main shadow is Petit Muveran (2810m), an attractive pointy mountain that I have subsequently taken to my heart. I like the pointy ones best, you see.

Update 21.4.14

Les Crowley (who runs the lovely Atmospheric Optics website - www.atoptics.co.uk/ ) says:

This [phenomenon] doesn't have a name. The sun is actually still above the horizon but from your viewpoint behind the mountain. It is shining _downwards_ onto a layer of _lower_ cloud between you and the mountain

Was a great sight to see this thunder head from a distance. I love how the sun lit up the clouds. Another great sight here in Burkina Faso. I belive this is a cumulonimbus incus cloud. Help from wiki of course...

Team National Summer Nationals 2007 held in Kansas City, MO. Gail (Lawanna), JoeAnn, and I flew from Valdosta to Atlanta and then to Kansas City for the convention.

on wednesday the gorgeous clouds were out in full force, so i pulled over on my way home from work to take a bunch of pictures :)

Another Tiskilwa, Illinois sunset. I have nearly a thousand sunset images taken from my yard in rural northern Illinois. Sometimes I wish there was an ocean in front yard, but at least there are lines of trees surrounding the cornfield across the road.

This image was one of three that I submitted for the Peak Photography 2011 competition run as part of the Buxton Festival held during the month of July. The theme of this years competition was 'fire and light' and attracted entries from national and international photographers coming from Derbyshire, South Yorkshire, London, Macedonia and Canada. With some serious photographers submitting and although I did not make the final placing for prizes, I was pleased to make the top fifteen finalists.

This image along with the other fourteen finalists will now be displayed alongside the finalists of the Poetry competition – held at the same time, in the University Devonshire Dome building in Buxton, Derbyshire until the 27th July when the festival comes to an end.

When my friends from England arrived in Calgary early in September, they had two or three days in Calgary before we took off for a week down to Yellowstone National Park and Grand Teton National Park. We spent a day at the Calgary Zoo and then spent a day - very wet! - in the Banff/Lake Louise area. We drove the Lake Minnewanka Loop - I love to see the almost vertical cliff face that is seen in so many photos of this lake. The ominous clouds above soon turned from drizzle into non-stop rain for the day.

Another shot of the Sunset captured this evening enroute from Miami to Bogota. Somewhere over the Caribbean. This cloud really cooperated with being in the right place at the right time.

Mammatus are pouch-like cloud structures and a rare example of clouds in sinking air. As updrafts carry precipitation enriched air to the cloud top, upward momentum is lost and the air begins to spread out horizontally, becoming a part of the anvil cloud. Because of its high concentration of precipitation particles, the saturated air is heavier than the surrounding air and sinks back towards the earth.

Awesome clouds over Fort Wayne on July 17, 2010.

This was the view from the DHL car park before I set off for home last night. I 'stopped down' the aperture to enhance the rays, it wasn't quite this dark!
