The Painted Desert - Petrified Forest National Park
Arizona, USA
Perhaps, you come to appreciate clouds more when you live in the desert and enjoy photography. So many days, the sky is just solid blue. The summer monsoon season brings some wonderful clouds, but also, some impressive thunder storms. Still, the desert can always use some rain.
The very appropriately named Painted Desert is also part of the Petrified Forest National Park. It is located in the northeast part of the state of Arizona on a high (5,000 ft) desert plateau and extends beyond the park into the Navajo Nation. The park is somewhat odd, but interesting. Access is easy because Interstate 40 actually runs through the park with the Painted Desert being on the northern side and the Petrified Forest on the southern side of the highway. The summer can bring magnificent monsoon clouds, but the temperatures are often extreme (Expect every day to approach 100F and often 110F). We were lucky during our autumn visit with a moderate number of visitor, mild temperatures with some clouds. The air was wonderfully transparent. We were only there for a few hours on a return trip from Santa Fe, NM, but it was well worth the visit.
Most of the vistas within the park are expansive and without the impact of man made structures.

When you get older
Your wild heart will live for younger days
Think of me if ever you're afraid
Never let anyone tell you what you can and cannot do
Trust me, I've learned the hard way
Time for a different subject!!
(Hmmm... just noticed here that I have now posted more than 10 000 items. That seems excessive; maybe I should rearrange priorities :)
I caught up with a friend over the weekend and was telling her about my trip - and she made a comment saying the US was beautiful but not much history. I then proceeded to tell her about the Pueblo people, the native americans, the spanish and then even further back the dinosaurs. At Ghost Ranch in New Mexico, where Georgia O' Keefe lived for many years, is now one of the most important paleonthology sites in the Northern Hemisphere. I saw there, in this teeny museum, some of the oldest dinosaur bones ever found - from 220 million years ago - I get dizzy even thinking about it. The Ranch is now run by a religious organisation and apparently Georgia was not happy when she heard that they had bought it ;).
