Longleaf pine: (Pinus palustris), a tree that goes by many names such as - longstraw, southern yellow, swamp, hard or heart, pitch and Georgia pine. The needles are actually very long; hence the name, they average 15-18cm. The tree grows mainly in sandy soil and develops a deep tap root before it begins to grow vertically so small trees look like a bunch of grass. Longleaf pine has adapted to its environment: So well, if fact that it can stay at the seedling stage for many years until conditions are right for maturity. When the tree does grow vertically it is very susceptible to fire and disease until it gets about 2-3 ft tall so it tries to reach this height within one growing season. The tree is highly flame resistant due to its thick bark and resin content. Longleaf pines actually thrive on the occasional burning of the forest which limits the density of growth of other species of flora. Longleaf pines can grow in height up to 160ft or more and they can be wider than 3 ft along the trunk base.
When first discovered and documented by early explorers, the longleaf pine was the only species of tree for millions of acres in Georgia and across the southeastern United States. As a retired Governor of Georgia, W.J. Northern wrote in memoir; “The entire region is, as it were, a vast plain nearly level, except in the north, and covered with a growth of long-leaf pine.” By 1920 this would no longer be true; commercial lumber practices and population growth were already taking their toll on the ecology of Georgia and the Longleaf pine forests.
Conflicting reports about the size of the original native range of the tree exist. The U.S. Geological Survey states that before man began to clear cut the long-leaf pine its territory ranged some 60 million acres: along the entire southeastern Unites States - from Virginia to Texas, encompassing a full two-thirds of Georgia in area. Some reports say that the area was closer to 90 million acres, but nearly all reports agree that today, that area is less than 4 million acres- total, and that number is dwindling.
Man’s GREED - Over production and clear cutting of the pine without forethought to regeneration is what killed these forests. Today there are a few places that are attempting to regenerate the Longleaf pine, such as Red Top Mountain State Park at Allatoona Lake in Georgia. There are more but man has “paved paradise to put up a parking lot” so we will never again see the immensity of the Longleaf pine forest as it was.

The Schuylkill Mall's Kmart store is in the process of closing. The announcement to shutter the store came in February 2015, with the actual closure happening in June. This closing follows soon after a Sears store at the same mall closed its doors.
It is the last of the original three anchor stores to close, with Hess's closing in 1997, and Sears in 2015. This leaves the mall with only two original stores, GNC and Radio Shack as all of the other original stores have moved out at some point in the malls history.
