The Clock Tower links 5 major streets (Gallowtree Gate, Humberstone Gate, Belgrave Gate, Church Gate and Eastgates). It is a Grade II listed building and is officially a memorial with four statues of sons of Leicester, one at each corner. The figures are Simon de Montfort, William Wyggeston (spelt 'William Wigston' on the tower itself), Thomas White and Gabriel Newton.
Constructed in 1868, the tower was designed by Joseph Goddard, and cost over £2000 (872 pounds, 2 shillings, and 9 pence contributed from 472 subscribers and the balance of the £1,200 provided by the Corporation of Leicester).
The tower was built mostly in Ketton stone with a base of Mountsorrel granite, and incorporates column shafts made of polished Peterhead granite and serpentine. The statues were made from Portland stone.
