Cliff of lithified, well-sorted, cross-bedded, (see photo with Steve as scale) calcareous (shell fragments) sand with red unconformities.

=> indurated aeolianite (lithified coastal dune), induration by precipitation and ground water dissolving of shell clasts.

=>

Red unconformities: Terra Rossa palaeosoils that developed in times of dune stability (moister climate, vegetation cover - interstadials or interglacials?) burried by advances of aeolian sands. Red colour (mostly haematite) formed by in-situ weathering of the carbonates (see underlying root-like features in section)

Sedona AZ, from Dry Creek Rd

Went out for a drive, ended up having fish n chips on Southend sea front.

After lots of walking in the very hot sun we couldn't climb the many stairs back up to the car so took the lift.

Also around Makawehi Bluff (a 10 mins hike from Shipwreck Beach), this was the rocky cliff formation that faced the ocean.

Captured this moment at the Britannia Heritage Shipyards in Richmond. Many thanks to GMcD for the location tip. A large flock of swallows were gathering up mud, for their nests, at a small mudbank exposed by the receding tide. Interestingly, they never stopped moving their wings, even while on the ground and gathering mud. I had shots that better showed the whole bird, (better for bird identification I suppose), but I was struck by how the detail of the wing shape and structure made this image a little bit special.

Warning sign at the Cliffs of Moher

Seen on a coastal walk in Devon.

As seen from a tour boat in Quebec's Mingan archipelago. These things are pretty remarkable!

Another cliff -- are you getting the impression there were several?

Also: this was for a time the top Google Images hit for "cliff", driving about 40% of my site's traffic. Go me!

The Manitou Cliff Dwellings is a rare historical treasure. Preserved under a protective red sandstone overhang, authentic Anasazi cliff dwellings, built more than 700 years ago, await you here. There are no "Do Not Touch" signs. You are free to touch and even go inside these fascinating architectural remnants of an American Indian culture that roamed the Four Corners area of the Southwest from 1200 B.C. to A.D. 1300.

The Manitou Cliff Dwellings is located in Manitou Springs, Colorado, at the foot of Pikes Peak, the mountain that provided the inspiration for the writing of, America the Beautiful. The dwellings are open seven days a week, year round, except for Christmas Day and Thanksgiving. During the summer months, Native American Indians - descendants of the Ancient Ones - demonstrate their living culture through traditional dances handed down from generation to generation.

Next to the cliff dwellings is a three-story Pueblo-style building that houses the Anasazi museum and a Southwestern gift shop. This structure was faithfully designed and constructed in the architectural style of the Pueblo Indians, descendants of the Anasazi.

Our outdoor archaeological and natural history preserve includes reproductions of a stone mesa-top building and an Anasazi baking oven. A nature walk with well-labeled native flowers, herbs, trees and other plants connects the cliff dwellings and the Pueblo structure.

My walk took me along the clifftops from Eldern Point (where I am standing) and past the mushroom shaped radar station on Titchberry Cliff

The Flamborough cliffs shot from Bempton on a Canon PowerShot G9.

Taken today. Flowers growing out of the rocks looked lovely against the bright blue sky.

Another from the beach, but this time with a bit of HDR involved. I didn't manage to capture the size of this cliff however. At 10mm, there is a lot of cliff here, but you just don't see it in the photo. Need someone climbing next time I guess.

Images used in HDR range from 1/4000 to 1/125th at ISO 100, f5.6, 10mm.

Island of Hoy, Orkney Islands

Thousands of seabirds breed on the chalk cliffs near Bempton. The RSPB manages a reserve there where one can observe gannets, puffins, guillemots, razorbills, fulmars, and kittiwakes during the breeding season, as well as other types of birds.

The cliffs at Newhaven in common with those towards Saltdean and Eastbourne are unstable yet beautiful in their own rights. Just don't walk too close to the edge!

Near the eastern end of the Great Ocean Road.
