After the spill, volunteers gathered to aid in the cleanup. This is partially because it was their own home towns that had been negatively impacted by the repercussions and partly because they felt as though they needed to help the wildlife and ecosystems. Also, some of the volunteers may have felt that they only way all the oil was going to get cleaned up was if they helped.

The Yakutat cleanup was also especially meaningful to Heather Conlin, HR and special projects manager. Heather sits on the Coastal CODE Fund Advisory Committee, which approved the grant that paid for the Yakutat cleanup.
