Today was also a day to remember my mom who passed away on Valentines Day 9 years ago at the age of 71.

A DOVE'S LUCKY DAY:
After looking for mourning doves in my community, I heard a soft coo-ing coming from my neighbor's house. Astonishingly, right when I turned my head back I saw this Cooper's Hawk (Accipiter cooperii) abruptly dive in from thin air and ambush the dove.
All three animals were extremely shocked by each other's sudden appearance. Much in the same way that the dove was so terrified by the hawk- the hawk was so frightened by me and my telephoto lens that was quickly pointed at his face- that the hawk missed his killing blow on the dove, whom quickly fled. If not for my accidental and unfortunate distraction, the dove definitely would've been breakfast. The hawk's ambush made my heart skip a beat as well.
The hawk himself also scrambled away from me, but momentarily returned to my house. I was able to snap just this one photo before he retreated back to his home and plot another attack.
While I saved the dove's life- this was not an admirable intervention and I certainly would not have distracted the hawk on purpose. Doves may symbolize peace but anthropomorphizing animals leads you down to a dangerous road of interfering with wildlife's natural ecology.
As for the image- I applied the Classic Negative film simulation, darkened the shadows, used a cold white balance, and increased the contrast to reflect the terror that the dove must've felt upon seeing the hawk's red eyes.
Cooper's Hawks are truly ferocious predators and I wish I was able to photograph the predation. Next time!

Canada geese are perhaps one of the most vilified birds in America. Their prolific excrement is to be blamed on the deterioration of the ecological health and beauty of many local parks. Parenting geese are seldom friendly to park-goers.
But- really, is it not our own fault? Who would leave a park if they were offered free bread every day?
Needlessly feeding wild animals wreaks havoc on the natural order.
Soon, this adored little chick grazing in the grass will follow the footsteps of his parents in depreciating home value and find himself under the scorn of humanity; the very same hands that once lovingly sustained him with bread!
Yet, I only heard sounds of adoration from the same people that curse the matured geese.
Our treatment of geese is no different than to our own kin. We put too much faith in the youth and innocent, and then corrupt them as we too have been.
Do bite the hands that feed you...

Drove 45 minutes (one way) this afternoon to take advantage of a miller's offer of available whole wheat flour. Needless to say, we'll all be glad when this nonsense is over. The nonsense being the COVIdiots and their panic-buying.

I applied the same Classic Negative style that I used in the series of the Konik horses. More on the style in this blog post.
Not certain if this is the correct Classic NEG film "recipe", but I think I like it in this light. This is SooC, and yes, we were graced with an early white blanket of snow this year. Yippee!
For those who have Fuji-X bodies, you do not have to wait for a firmware update, just tinker with the configuration of your current FUJIFILM mirrorless camera!
