Mark Antony. Summer 31 BC. AR Denarius (18mm, 3.47 g, 12h). Mint with Antony at Actium(?). Bare head right / Victory standing left, holding wreath tied with fillet and palm branch; D (TV)R to lower right; all within wreath. Crawford 545/1; CRI 387; Sydenham 1211; RSC 11; Mazzini 11 (same obv. die).

According to Sear (CRI), this was the final issue minted by Antony. This coinage is believed to have been struck to pay his troops in Greece proximate to the battle at Actium. There are two versions of this issue, one with the D TVR on the reverse and one without. Those with the monogram, like the present specimen, were struck under one of Antony's last remaining senior officers, Decimus Turullius. Turullius was one of the assassins of Julius Caesar on the Ides of March, and a staunch republican who came to identify Antony as the leader of the republican cause. Captured at Actium, he was later executed by Octavian. The obverse is significant for a number of reasons. The portrait of Antony, while Greek in character, clearly shows the stresses and disappointments that Antony had suffered in the final years before Actium. Perhaps more interesting is the obverse titulature, in which Antony claims a fourth imperatorial acclamation. Coinage in his name as of 32 BC still bore the title IMP III, and as no victory was attained by Antony in the intervening year, this fourth acclamation can only be a boast predicting a glorious victory over Octavian in the impending showdown. It is also speculated that the Victory type on the reverse is also used for the same purpose, and possibly to inspire the troops.

The importance of portraiture as a form of mass media in the ancient world is considered in this exhibition of some fifty works focusing on the "bad" emperors and empresses of Rome. Flattering depictions in sculpture, gems, and coins would broadcast a ruler's image throughout the empire, but when he, or occasionally she, was overthrown in disgrace, the object would be destroyed or, as this exhibition shows, reworked.

the empire with an uninterrupted supply of grain, as well as other necessary supplies, the merchantman (Greek nauV stroggulh; Latin navis oneraria) was a ship with a broad beam. Many of these vessels, like the ponto or more common actuaria resembled the shape of a trireme and could be powered by both oars and sails. Since ships of this type were used to transport vital commodities such as wine and grain, they, like the large ponto, are often those shown on coins from the Black Sea. The great Roman merchantman, or corbita, often seen in part on imperial issues commemorating the annona, is more familiar. Powered by two large sails, it featured a rear cabin in the shape of a swan and was the true workhorse of Roman merchant vessels; its type continued well into the Byzantine period.

This coin is one of the earliest to show Octavian's new title and the new name by which he would become known. After his death, all future emperors would take this title as a sovereign right. The cistophorus was a coin made to circulate in the Roman province of Asia. Its large size, as well as the name, was inherited from a Greek coin which circulated earlier in the region. Its weight, however, was equivalent to three denarii. The sphinx on the reverse was well known as the device on Augustus' signet ring.

The attribution of the sestertii of Britannicus has been a matter of some speculation. Formerly, the issue had been attributed to Rome around the end of Claudius’ reign when Britannicus adopted the toga virilis. Mattingly, however, demonstrated that such an attribution was problematic, since the Rome mint was not producing aes at that time. Instead, he assigned the type to the early years of Titus, when many restoration and commemorative issues were being struck, a logical assumption given the reported close friendship between the two. More recently, substantial numbers of Latin coins (sestertii and dupondii) in the name of Britannicus, Agrippina Jr., Nero Caesar, and Nero Augustus have been found in the Balkan region, and von Kaenel argued for a Thracian origin for the series. Von Kaenel’s analysis is plausible, since the style and fabric of the coins, as well as the find spots, indeed suggest a Thracian mint, and such local issues would have been struck for use by the legions servicing the border.

Tiberius Claudius Germanicus was born on 12 February AD 41, only a few weeks after his father Claudius became emperor. After Claudius' conquest of Britain in AD 43, the boy's name was changed to Tiberius Claudius Caesar Britannicus, and the sources refer to him simply as Britannicus. In AD 55 while dining with friends, he was poisoned and died. The murder was almost certainly ordered by Nero who wanted to clear the way for his own succession to the throne.

Boscoreale Treasure

The originality and exceptional quality of this emblema dish make it one of the most important items of the silver treasure discovered in 1895 at Boscoreale, in a Roman villa buried by the eruption of Vesuvius in AD 79. The female bust in the center wears an elephant hide and is accompanied by a profusion of symbols whose interpretation remains uncertain: perhaps a portrait of Cleopatra, or her daughter, or an allegorical personification of Africa or Alexandria?

Description

The Boscoreale Treasure

In AD 79 Vesuvius erupted violently, destroying the civilization of the Naples region and, significantly, burying the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum under a thick layer of ash. The bodies of the inhabitants were "fossilized" as they fled or fell, and numerous humble and precious artefacts were preserved and rediscovered in their original context during the eighteenth century. In 1895 excavations at a Roman villa at Boscoreale, on the slopes of the volcano, uncovered an exceptional hoard of silver treasure, including 109 pieces of silverware, grooming items and jewelry, stashed in a water tank by the owner before the eruption. This prestigious ensemble dates from the late first century BC and the early first century AD, when Roman metalworking flourished. Of all the luxurious items found at Boscoreale, this large, partially gilded silver dish is notable for the originality and remarkable quality of its applied, repoussé and engraved decoration.

A profusion of symbols

The interior band of the dish is decorated with a garland of laurels and myrtle, laden with berries. In the center is a bust of a young woman wearing an elephant hide, holding a cobra in her right hand and a horn of plenty full of fruit in her left. The emblema is striking for the abundance of symbols accompanying the female figure. The bust is surrounded by numerous divine attributes: the bow and quiver of Artemis, the club of Heracles, the dolphin of Poseidon, the sistrum of Isis, the tongs of Hephaestus, the caduceus of Asclepios, the lyre of Apollo and the two-edged sword of Ares.

A lion rests on the young woman's shoulder, together with a panther on her breast, and a peacock in her bosom, which is also filled with fruit. The horn of plenty is surmounted by a crescent moon, and decorated with a bust of the sun god Helios, an eagle and the helmets of the Dioscuri (Castor and Pollux, the twin deities who were believed to help shipwrecked sailors.)

Portrait or allegory?

Many questions still surround the interpretation of this emblema. The elephant hide, an allusion to the campaigns of Alexander the Great in India, often indicates a personification of a town or country; associated here with the lion and panther, it may identify the bust as an allegory of Africa or Alexandria. However, the careful rendering of the woman's hair and her individualized features suggest a portrait rather than a purely idealized personification. The figure may indeed portray the features of the Egyptian queen Cleopatra VII, in the guise of an allegory of Plenty. The mistress of Julius Caesar and Mark Antony, Cleopatra was forced to commit suicide after the victory of Octavian at Actium in 31 BC. The uraeus (the snake on the figure's crown) is an Egyptian symbol of divine power and royal dignity, and may recall Cleopatra's death by snake-bite, after which Egypt's fabulous wealth became part of the Roman Empire. Alternatively, the crescent moon on the horn of plenty could refer to Cleopatra's daughter by Mark Antony, Cleopatra Selena, who is associated with the moon.

The moneyer L. Livineius Regelus was likely the son of the praetor of the same name who served under Caesar in the African War. Crawford has suggested that the reverse design might refer to an incident that occurred during the Thapsus campaign, related by Suetonius (Divus Julius, 59): “Religious scruples never deterred him [Caesar] for a moment. At the formal sacrifice before he launched his attack on Scipio and King Juba, the victim [a bull] escaped; but he paid no heed to this most unlucky sign and marched off at once.”
