A muse, one of the goddesses of the arts and learning, reaches up and adjusts the wreath on her head on this fragment of a Roman fresco. She carries a tragic theater mask, and probably represents Melpomene, the muse of Tragedy. Her slightly windblown clothing and the position of her feet give the impression that she is floating against the broad expanse of the yellow background.

Floating figures in the center of a fresco panel were common in Roman wall painting of the first century A.D. The Romans frequently decorated their homes with images drawn from the theater. Theatrical references found in wall-painting range from entire stage scenes to isolated theatrical masks, from portraits of playwrights to images of the Muses.

This fragment is only a small section of a fresco that once covered an entire wall of a room. It is said to come from Boscoreale, one of the towns located at the base of Mount Vesuvius destroyed when the volcano erupted in A.D. 79. Boscoreale was a resort town housing the country villas of rich Romans escaping the noise and crowding of the city.

A young woman stands looking out from a balcony on this Roman fresco fragment. She sips from a shallow cup and steadies an oinochoe, or pitcher, on the balcony railing. The identity of the woman remains uncertain. She may be a highborn daughter relaxing in her home, or she may be a servant girl avoiding her chores. Another interpretation is that the woman alludes to a famous work of the Greek painter Pausias made in the 300s B.C. that depicted Methe, the personification of drunkenness.

This fresco is only a small fragment cut from an entire wall of painted decoration. The color scheme used on the fragment associates it with the so-called Second Style of Roman wall painting, a style that used illusionistic architecture to create a three-dimensional effect. This fragment is probably from the upper zone of a small dining room, or triclinium. The right-to-left shadows cast by the bosses on the railing indicate that this painting originally decorated the right-hand wall of the room as one entered it.

Depicted with close-cropped hair rendered by short curving locks, with a receding M-shaped hairline, his forehead creased, his knit brows creating vertical creases above the nose, the small eyes with heavy upper lids and crow's feet at the corners, with deep naso-labial folds framing the mouth, echoed by deep folds in the cheeks and along the jawline, in particular on the proper left side, the thin-lipped unsmiling mouth downturned at the corners; mounted on a later 18th-19th century cuirassed bust with a facing female head in relief, wearing a paludamentum pinned on the left shoulder

Sextus Pompey, the younger son of Pompey the Great, inherited his father's vast influence and personal following. He first established himself in Spain in 44 BC as the successful leader of the anti-Caesarian forces. Following the death of Caesar, the Senate, believing itself freed from the domination of the Caesarians, bestowed on Sextus the title of praefectus classis et orae maritimae (Commander-in-Chief of the Fleet and of the Sea Coasts). Four months later, however, the Senate was forced by Octavian and the second triumvirate to rescind this title and Sextus was proscribed. Upon receiving word of the Senate's abrogation of his commission and receiving reports of the revenge the Caesarians were exacting on the leading figures in Rome, Sextus set sail from Massalia in Gaul and headed for Sicily. Here he established a powerful base from which he could blockade Italy and provide a safe haven for those fleeing the proscriptions. Alarmed at these developements, Octavian sent a naval squadron under the command of Salvidienus Rufus to handle the situation, but Salvidienus was defeated off the coast of Rhegium. Following this battle, Sextus took the title of imperator iterum. Sextus continued the republican struggle against the second triumvirate until his death in 36 BC.
