Wolverton Works in the BR era was synonymous with the rolling programme of overhauls on the BR 25kv AC EMU fleet and a large proportion of the locomotive hauled coaching stock. This meant the works always had a varied collection of units and stock in generally from the London Midland and Eastern Regions but visitors from the Southern and Scottish could also be found on occasions. Sadly most of this part of the works is now vacant and up for demolition and redevelopment.

This view is inside the west repair shop one of the three main body shops at the works looking between the parted EMU vehicles. It depicts AC EMU classes 302, 305 and 312 in for attention. Quite what the bit of kit does on the trolley in the foreground I am not sure but someone will no doubt have the answer.

Class 306 unit no 091 stands at London Liverpool Street (platform 11, I think) one Sunday in 1981 before heading out to Gidea Park. Next to it is unit no 201, the first of the class 302s, bound for Southend Victoria.

The opening of the DLR offered a new photographic opportunity at Shadwell station and on 6 September 1991, we see 302227 passing Shadwell, in its original condition, on the 1100 Fenchurch Street - Shoeburyness.

In the late 80s and early 90s, Ilford depot had four LT&S class 302 units that had been converted for parcels use on the Great Eastern lines. 302990 stands at Liverpool Street.

302230 at Tilbury Town, working 16.20 Fenchurch Street - Southend Central on the last day of class 302 operation.

I'd been to Kent to photograph the Deltic-hauled Virgin Trains summer Saturday Ramsgate service, but then stopped off on the LT&S on the way back because it was the last day of the class 302 EMUs. After spending much of the afternoon photographing in a few places, I parked at Shoeburyness and travelled into Fenchurch Street (302210, on the 19.20 departure) and back (302230 at 22.20 - but I can't remember whether that was actually the last 302-worked service). There were, of course, lots of enthusiasts around.

Unit 247 heads a train for Shoeburyness.

37263 sits at the head of the 'Essex Explorer' railtour in the platform at Shoeburyness station, with Class 302 EMU, 302285 alongside. 19th March 1983.

The Fenchurch Street-Shoeburyness class 302 unit No.244 was unusual in that it had been reformed using a spare Manchester-Bury class 504 driving trailer No.M77164. This trailer retained its place in 302244 until 1985 when a replacement class 302 driving trailer was located. It was then consigned for scrap in 1985 and was photographed in the Sheffield scrapyard of Marple and Gillott at the former BR Attercliffe Goods Yard. Unit 302 244 was involved in an accident with a lorry at a level crossing at Low Street railway station in Tilbury, after which it was decided to scrap the leading carriage. This was replaced with the class 504 trailer M77164 from Bury. The trailer faces BR 2nd class SK corridor coach M25400 also in for breaking up.

Royal Mail liveried class 302 (formerly AM2) EMU 302990.

The 302s were based on the standard BR Mk1 bodyshell and were built for the LT&SR line between 1958 & 1960 at Doncaster and York Works.

The class was withdrawn in 1999 after around forty years in service.

Fenchurch Street in the early 1980s was a fairly grim place. A cold December morning in 1984 finds 302233 at a canopy-free station. Note the 1960s ER enamel platform number sign and the heavyweight catenary of the 6.25kV still in use at the time.

Class 302 EMU 302279 at Fenchurch Street station

Perhaps the most colourful livery carried by a GE electric unit, the red unit is a Class 302 EMU converted for Royal Mail service. Not really sure what the sister unit in blue/grey is - was it regular passenger stock coupled to the Mail set for a depot working, or is it another set converted for non-passenger use?

The last operation of a class 302 on a peak service arrives at Pitsea

On 16 September 1985, 302257 arrives at Purfleet on an up service. The Midland Railway signalbox is no more.
