Built in 1903 at the corner of Mills Avenue and Carter Avenue, the former St. Elizabeth Catholic Church was designed by an unknown architect in the Romanesque Revival-Byzantine Revival style. The building replaced a combination parochial school and church building that was constructed in 1887 to the rear of the present structure to serve the growing population on the west side of Norwood. The building features extensive Renaissance Revival details, rusticated limestone, three rose windows, two prominent bell towers, and a copper-clad dome over the crossing between the nave, chancel, and transepts. In the rear, a two-and-a-half-story classroom building was constructed along Lincoln Avenue in the early 20th Century out of buff brick to provide additional space for the St. Elizabeth Parochial School, located to the rear of the building along Carter Avenue. The church closed in 1994 and the congregation was merged with the nearby Immaculate Conception and Holy Trinity parishes, located in the northern and eastern sections of Norwood, respectively. In 1995, the church was bought by the Vineyard Central Church, which continues to occupy the building.

The stone cladding is finally finished

... so visible in winter.

I wonder how often this wood needs to be replaced in between rotting. It's incredibly humid in Japan after all.

Built in 1916, this Renaissance Revival-style limestone-clad building was designed by Electus D. Litchfield to house the James J. Hill Reference Library, a privately-funded business research library that was largely created thanks to a contribution by James J. Hill, founder of the Great Northern Railway. The library operated until 2019, later being known as the James J. Hill Center, when it was closed thanks to unsustainable finances and needs for building renovations, and the building was sold in 2021. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.

Built in 1905, this Classical Revival-style skyscraper was designed by Thomas H. Scott for Caroline Jones Machesney, the daughter and heir of a banker, and was originally known as the Machesney Building, being the only skyscraper in Downtown Pittsburgh commissioned by a woman. The building was sold in 1913 to Joe Trees and Michael Late Benedum, and has since been known as the Benedum-Trees Building. The building features a terra cotta-clad front facade and buff brick side and rear facades, one-over-one double-hung windows, spandrel panels with cartouches, cornices with egg and dart motif, modillions, and dentils, fluted corinthian columns, and bay windows at the base of the building. The building is a contributing structure in the Fourth Avenue Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985, and expanded to its present size in 2013.
