Congrats to undergraduate students, Brenda Ramirez and Diana Garcia, who are advised by Informatics Research Scientist and Artist-in-Residence Garnet Hertz and Informatics faculty member Gillian Hayes for winning 3rd place at “Engage UCI: A Celebration of Community Collaboration”
They presented a poster titled, “Circuit Bending: Technology and Community Outreach for Children in Latino Communities”
“Circuit Bending is the creative short-circuiting of electronic devices such as children’s toys and small digital synthesizers to create new musical or visual instruments and sound generators. Circuit bending usually involves dismantling electronics and adding components such as switches and potentiometers that alter the circuit.”

Circuit bending es la manera creativa de hacer corto circuitos en aparatos eléctricos de bajo voltaje (como juguetes para niños) para crear nuevos instrumentos musicales o generadores de sonido. Enfatizando la espontaneidad y la aleatoriedad el circuit bending ha sido asociado comúnmente con la música NOISE, aunque esta técnica se ha usado en contextos diversos.
Básicamente esta técnica consiste en conectar los diferentes componentes electrónicos de un aparato entre si de formas que no fueron pensadas en su diseño original, de modo que resulten en comportamientos extraños que puedan llegar a ser interesantes sonoramente. La manera mas fácil de hacer esto es con la ayuda de “caimanes” , que son pares de pinzas sujetadoras unidas por un cable. Fijando uno de los extremos del caimán a un componente se pueden buscar diferentes puntos de contacto con el otro extremo del caimán observando los resultados.
El término circuit bending fue acuñado por Reed Ghazala en los años 60´s siendo él uno de los pioneros en esta técnica.
El taller consiste en una conversación acerca de la teoría básica para hacer un circuit bending y los materiales que se ocupan.
Luego se hará un taller práctico donde se intervendrán juguetes, cada participante debe llevar un juguete que emita sonidos y a pila para intervenir.
Materiales requeridos:
•Juguete a pila en desuso que tengan sonidos de cualquier tipo (teclados, pianitos, muñecas, pistolas, guitarras, figuritas, juguetes de bebe, etc.)
•1 metro de cable delgado de red UTP o teléfono.
•Alicate cortante, destornilladores de punta y cruz. (chicos)
•Soldador eléctrico 30 watts, estaño, cinta aislante. (se consigue en cualquier ferreteria).
•Taladro o Dremel.
Convoca: Matucana 100, Sudamérica Experimental y Productora Mutante.

Made for cellist "Chipper" to control custom musical software made using Pure Data, with her feet.
This is a keyboard encoder based, so could be used with other things like Ableton.
All recycled materials including screws (apart from laptop).
The pedals are like miniature diving boards of perspex that act as actuators for the original PTM switches from the keyboard.

Garnet Hertz held a circuit bending workshop at the Institute for Multimedia Literacy in the School of Cinematic Arts at USC on August 5th 2010. The workshop was held as part of "Broadening the Digital Humanities", which is designed to foster innovative multimedia research. Sponsors include The University of California's Humanities Research Institute, USC's Institute for Multimedia Literacy and the electronic journal Vectors.

(se comenzó a construir en invierno de 2008.)
Artefacto sonoro artesanal, construido mezclando circuitos simples y componentes electrónicos en desuso,
su función no solo es ser un instrumento musical versátil,
también funciona como estación de prueba experimental al poseer pre amplificadores de todo tipo, osciladores, efectos de audio simples ( en ese tiempo)
y ser facilmente modificable a través de la técnica del circuit bendig.
Actualmente este artefacto y ano luce igual, esta siempre cambiando, ya que para eso fue creado, es un sintetizador con circuito abierto, orgánico, que se desarrolla con el tiempo a medida que me va enseñando como se compone y sintetiza el sonido electrónico.

durante su visita a La Serena ese verano, en lo que en ese tiempo era El Disco Volador, estudio casero dedicado a la experimentación sonora y el registro artesanal y precario de creadores independientes vinculados a humilde Records.

You can see the solder joints on the back of the veroboard where all of the components and wires have been soldered.
Slow day at the store so I made this dumb thing.
In Stupephone mode, it's played by playing the 'keyboard' with the metal fingerpick at the top right. The pitch is determined by the resistance, so it has to be retuned for each person playing it.
In Therething mode, you ground yourself on the red stud and play the metal plate like a theremin. The harder you press, the lower the pitch.... drumming your fingers on it sounds like someone hit R2-D2 with a tazer. Has about a 5-octave range if you can control it....
All runs on a 9V battery with internal speaker and has a 1/4" jack if you need to 'gig' with it and plug it into an amp or larger cab. It actually powers a 4x12" at pretty good volume on it's own.
