- A Super Doorag, melodies, beat box modulated by pitch or photocell. This circuit is so versatile that you can play a whole gig with this machine; jack out put. 150 euros.
Here's more information:
The big button in the center selects melodies and rhythm, the small red button on top of this selecter is to select more melodies and rhythm. The switch on the left has 2 positions: one to cut the sound and other to switch the rhythm. The other switch on the right mixes the melody and the rhythm on one position and on the other one changes five different filters over the melodies.
On the upper front, the switch under the jack entry also switches melodies and shoots beats.
On the left (upper front), there is a photo cell (in red color), it will pitch the sound and rhythm through the light. The small red switch on top of it changes the pitch from light to the normal button on the left side of the doorag. This is a manual pitch. On the back you have the on/off. This doorag works with 3 AA batteries (4 1/2 volts)

Garnet Hertz held a circuit bending workshop at the Institute for Multimedia Literacy in the School of Cinematic Arts at USC on August 5th 2010. The workshop was held as part of "Broadening the Digital Humanities", which is designed to foster innovative multimedia research. Sponsors include The University of California's Humanities Research Institute, USC's Institute for Multimedia Literacy and the electronic journal Vectors.
Buddha Box, wire, brass, and conductive foam.
The Buddha Box is a little electronic gadget that plays any of 12 chants over and over again. I wired it up with a brass tablet and drumstick so I can play it like a drum-- each hit switches to a new chant. (A little bit of conductive foam on the end of the drumstick muffles the tapping sound.)
It sounds like this.
An Arduino microcontroller board driving eight solenoids via a ULN2803 driver chip. The solenoids tap out a rhythm under the control of the Arduino.

My work with chance in art began long ago, when I was a little kid. Here are some pictures and thoughts on that...

Early in my experience as circuit-bent instrument designer I noticed an otherness in the bent instrument, an animal-like personality in the which-way-will-it-run? nature of my unleashed circuitry.
I enjoyed this raccoon-like behavior, this creature-circuit, and extended its persona into finishing elements.
Creating stencils, I was able to make paints look like alligator scales, feathers and fur. This seems to just happen as well, as I let the instrument's shape suggest pattern placements.
An organic re-forming of plastics would follow, a practice I call plastikenisis. And I began to add eyes to instruments, active electronic eyes, as real and animal-like as I could achieve.
These eYe sculptures underscore my work with chance via these elements:
• Plastikenisis (kinetic plastic) of the eye socket creates a unique ocular eruptoid for every sculpture.
• Finishing elements are chance-arranged as my custom combinations of paints and dusts inter-react during curing.
• Each eYe sculpture contains electronic circuitry to illuminate the eye from within. Typically, in one direction the switch will light the eye a constant color: purple, pink, maybe a blending of set colors. With the switch thrown in the opposite direction a chance spectrum of colors begins to flow, beautiful and mesmerizing.
The eyes in these sculptures are hand designed. All are glass. The animal eyes are hand-painted to accurately represent the species. The human eyes are true ocular prosthetics, traditionally hand-blown in Germany for the war blind, accident victims, and those who have suffered misadventures.
Many of the eYe sculptures are fluorescent or phosphorescent, glowing by themselves or under black light. Or, after being turned-off, the eye itself may continue to glow green, yellow, purple, or a luminescent combination of colors (hi-tech glow-in-the-dark paints inside the sculpture).
I incorporate the triangle and glory of the All Seeing Eye to extend symbology beyond my instrument needs, and into the classicism of seeing.
Rooted in the Egyptian Eye of Horus, tied to Buddhism, Masonry, Providence and alchemy, as mystic "evil eye" (to repel evil) or declaration Novus Ordo Seclorum ("New Order of the Ages"), the symbology endures.
These sculptures are small icons of my work, numbered and signed in gold leaf.

Found a housing, a butler hand I bought at a Savers or Goodwill store at El Paso Texas.
I got the the knob from an old hearing testing machine in a dumpster which fitted perfectly on the hand.

Here is the full view from the front. The only original things are the buttons on the neck, and the power switch. All the other buttons/switches/knobs/ports were added, as well as the two status LEDs.

Congrats to undergraduate students, Brenda Ramirez and Diana Garcia, who are advised by Informatics Research Scientist and Artist-in-Residence Garnet Hertz and Informatics faculty member Gillian Hayes for winning 3rd place at “Engage UCI: A Celebration of Community Collaboration”
They presented a poster titled, “Circuit Bending: Technology and Community Outreach for Children in Latino Communities”
“Circuit Bending is the creative short-circuiting of electronic devices such as children’s toys and small digital synthesizers to create new musical or visual instruments and sound generators. Circuit bending usually involves dismantling electronics and adding components such as switches and potentiometers that alter the circuit.”
