Down on Roger Wilkins farm, at Mudgeley, mid-Somerset...this was where
Acker Bilk said he first tasted cider, by cycling from Pensford, his home.
I called that day, ordered a taste, and 1 pint to take home. The bottle was unlabelled. Several people were sitting around, enjoying cider. I saw a room next door to the barrels, piled high with shoes. Why,....
I could not guess.....
This was a few years ago....
A Myena cider gum catches first light on a frosty dawn in lutruwita/Tasmania’s central highlands. These trees are critically endangered: endemic to lutruwita/Tasmania only eight small stands remain , after bush fires wiped out many in 2019. It grows in frost hollows : it is the most frost tolerant eucalypt in the world, and the tree sap ferments : Wayalinah is a drink made from the sap of the Tasmanian cider gum and fermented by Aboriginal people for thousands of years.

Roasted Butternut Squash, Radish, Goat Cheese Candied Walnuts, Maple-Cider Vinaigrette
Groton, Massachusetts
At a farm location deep in Herefordshire UK. A county where cider has been made for hundreds of years. Even today, Bulmers Cider of Hereford, is one of the largest producers of cider in the world. Herefordshire also has many independent producers of the liquid gold, such as Newton Court, Gwatkin, Robinsons, Olivers and the Orgasmic Cider Company!
Cider was a common beverage in Millbrook, NJ in the 1800's, but it was also used in the making of apple butter, household vinegar, and sometimes hard cider, applejack or wine. The farmer brought his apples to the cider mill to be ground into pomace and pressed. The resulting sweet cider was pumped into barrels to be sold or taken home. This building replaced another building that once stood on the same site. Volunteers held a barn-raising style event in 1998, using mostly wood they had cut and fit themselves. (millbrooknj.com)

The Equinox has passed, the nights are drawing in and the leaves are beginning to turn. The last of the harvest is safely gathered in and thoughts turn to warm fires and warm food and drink. The Primus Optimus 96 paraffin stove is a perfect little portable cooker — ideal for some spicy mulled cider.
