Patti's entry; I could have eaten a gallon of this, I love chowder and this was very good. Lucky for me there were leftovers to take home!
Went down to Chowder Bay at dawn this morning, set up on the rock pools and shot these as the sun came up. This is probably my favourite shot from the set.
A successful chowderfest indeed, as proven by my 42 sample cups.
Yes, there were "only" 23 chowders competing - yet I sampled 42 (breaking last year's record of 41). Well, I did take 2 samples if the chowder was particularly tasty - but as any good judge knows, one must sample the Clam category (the most competitive category) a 2nd time. Because at some point they have to bring in a second batch, and you must make sure that the second batch is as good as (or in some cases as bad as) the first batch.
So after a 2nd spin around the Clam category, I was ready to pack it in.
made this last night. made my own adjustments: used veggie broth, leftover grilled corn & multi-colored cherry tomatoes from the garden.
reheated for lunch today.
Nick's #5 on the wharf has great chowder, creamy, not pasty thick. It has a Sweet Clam taste, not that strong old fishy rubber clammy taste that you often come across. Now most people like theirs in a bread bowl. I prefer to order a pint container. If you are known to tip and are well liked you may be offered a 1/4 loaf of day old sour dough, which I did get.
If you get lucky like me, tear up a few pieces to soak and sop up about 1/4 of the container. Then, tear up the rest of the crusty bread into bite-sized chunks & throw it into the container, walk to a nice spot to sit to do the spoon work. If 16 ounces of this with 4 ounces of sourdough does not do it for you as a filling meal you eat too much.
This is the dog we fostered and did not end up adopting. He was awesome. We were not ready for a dog full-time, but we were ready to spoil him, bathe him, and give him a vacation with loving people for the weekend, so he would stand out in a crowd. He's probably adopted at this moment! This photo is such a good memory of this challenging time. I can do it, and I learned that during that weekend!
