This week the challenge was soup. Liz suggested corn chowder so that is what we decided on. I’ve never made corn chowder or any other chowder so this was a new endeavor. Again I used www.SeriousEats.com as a starting point. I read through their recipe and write to get an idea of what goes into a chowder and how to get a creamy thick chowder. Make sure to check out www.SeptemberLoveStory.com for the full write up and the rest of the pictures.

Autumn Chowder - A colourful soup for colder days

Nick's #5 on the wharf has great chowder, creamy, not pasty thick. It has a Sweet Clam taste, not that strong old fishy rubber clammy taste that you often come across. Now most people like theirs in a bread bowl. I prefer to order a pint container. If you are known to tip and are well liked you may be offered a 1/4 loaf of day old sour dough, which I did get.
If you get lucky like me, tear up a few pieces to soak and sop up about 1/4 of the container. Then, tear up the rest of the crusty bread into bite-sized chunks & throw it into the container, walk to a nice spot to sit to do the spoon work. If 16 ounces of this with 4 ounces of sourdough does not do it for you as a filling meal you eat too much.
You can't make a bowl of this stuff ... I've got another gallon of it in the frig! I can take a lot more pics tomorrow! Haha ...Auto Tagged By Tagnics
The sixth annual Chowder Challenge is coming up on Saturday, Feb. 25th from Noon to 4 pm at Fifth Quadrant. A dozen samples of traditional New England-style clam chowders from restaurants around town are served in non-labeled, two-ounce cups. After tasting all entries, attendees vote for their favorite. The chowder receiving the most votes is named the People's Choice Winner and takes home the coveted Chowder Cup. This year's restaurants include Cascade Brewing Barrel House, Columbia River Brewing, D's Bar, Deschutes Brewery, EAT, El Gaucho, Fifth Quadrant, The Green Dragon, New Old Lompoc, Radio Room, Salty's and Trebol. The New Old Lompoc, known throughout the city for its chowder, has taken home the Chowder Cup four of the past five years.
