Chili Gulch was a 8km ravine that was the richest gold deposit in Calaveras County. It was named for the Chileans who mined the area in 1848-1849 and the resultant racial conflict known as the "Chilean War".

A relatively new country in 1848, Chile was struck hard by the California Gold Rush, being closer to the new territory by ship than the rest of the United States. Perhaps 5000 left Chile in the first few months of 1849 alone, forcing the government to require the use of passports to leave the country. Experienced working in the mines of the Andes, many Chileans were successful in their efforts. This included Chili Gulch, where some have estimated 200 Chileans successfully worked their claims.

The wealth quickly bred jealousy. One thing that infuriated the Anglos was the system of peonage, where indentured servants who had arrived at the gold fields on the credit of a wealthy individuals would work in servitude until that debt was paid. Hence one individual could profit immensely from the labor and mining claims of many (this also contributed to California's immediate dislike of slavery). At Chili Gulch one Dr. Concha led the Chilean community and with some lieutenants drove off any Anglo miner who attempted to work in the area. Angry Anglos gathered at a meeting and immediately decided to adopt a series of laws, first and foremost the expulsion of all Chileans from the area. They served their new laws to the Chilean community, and soon after fighting and claim jumping broke out as the Anglo miners immediately tried to enforce the "law".

Eventually Dr. Concha went to Stockton to complain of their plight to a judge, who ordered a writ of arrest to the Calaveras miners. The writ was physically prevented from being served by the sheriff, upon which the Chileans decided to take matters into their own hands. The next morning the Chileans attacked and surrounded a company of Anglos in the area, killing two in the exchange, and taking the remaining 13 as prisoners to take to Stockton. However on the way over the Anglo miners escaped (or overpowered their captors or got reinforcements) and eventually turned the tables on their captors. Three Chileans were then executed for murder, with another five received 50 public lashings and shaved heads, and three sentenced to 30 public lashings and cropped ears. The remaining Chileans were expelled. This ended the Chilean War, which would become a political issue in Chilean-American international relationships for decades (most notably the USS Baltimore Incident of 1891).

Going to try to grow them this year. If successful, I'll try to turn one or two plants into bonsai chilis, bonchis.

Chili peppers on display at Manama's old bazaar in Bahrain.

Home grown wild salad of arugula and radicchio (fluffed up with some store-bought green leaf) and balsamic vinaigrette.

Delicious chili with grass-fed beef and canned beans (though, honestly venison w/dried beans is a tastier choice), served with monterey jack cheese and a dab of that Vietnamese chili sauce that is my latest addiction. This was very good, but the aforementioned improvements and a longer cooking time would have helped it even more - I only decided at lunch to make this for dinner, so I had it on high from about 12:30 to 6pm.

Ideally, you can soak dried beans all day, cook in the crock pot all night, then put the other fixins - tomatoes, meat, chili powder, cumin, onions, garlic, etc. - in the crock pot in the morning and cook all day (the crock pot stays on low for a good 18 hrs). The beans want to fall apart near the end of that day, but it is soooo worth it. Also venison. I am making myself hungry!

Arica is a commune and a port city in the Arica Province of northern Chile's Arica and Parinacota Region, located only 18 km south of the border with Peru. Known as the "city of the eternal spring"

In 1855, the Peruvian government inaugurated the Arica-Tacna railroad (53 km long), one of the first in Latin America. The rail line still functions.

Glockenchili Capsicum baccatum

I created this a second time with less heat and entered it into the chili cook-off at work. Definitely want to make a few versions of this.

The jalapeño (/ˌhæləˈpiːnoʊ/ or /ˌhæləˈpeɪnjoʊ/, Spanish pronunciation: [xalaˈpeɲo] ( listen)) is a medium-sized chili pepper pod type cultivar of the species Capsicum annuum.[2] A mature jalapeño fruit is 5–10 cm (2–4 in) long and hangs down with a round, firm, smooth flesh of 1–1.5 in (25–38 mm) wide. It is of mild to medium pungency, 1,000 and 20,000 Scoville units in general. It is commonly picked and consumed while still green, but occasionally it is allowed to fully ripen and turn crimson red; and other cultivar variations of the same pod type exist. It is wider and milder than the Serrano pepper.[3] The Chile Pepper Institute is known for developing colored variations.
