Every year I like to make something with beans in it for new year's because they're said to bring luck and prosperity. This year I made chili and decided to serve it for New Year's Eve.
The chili came out great, made with lots of hens of the woods mushrooms, which do well when they are slow cooked, so I did them with the beans. Yum. I think the black trumpets make it especially yummy, even though my traditional Texas chili cooking relatives would roll over in their graves with my changes to their secret recipe!
Gnarly Head zinfandel held up to the chili really well, but then again, zinfandel is about all I drink, so what do I know?

www.foodthinkers.com/2009/11/baby-octopus-with-chili-and-...
Baby octopus is a hors d'oeuvre that is different as well as gourmet but just make sure to pair it with the appropriate wine. Our recipe includes flavors of chili and lime that makes a little more difficult to pick that perfect bottle of vino. You should really pay special attention to choosing something to compliment the spiciness of the chili.
Ingredients:
* 750 grams of baby octopus, cleaned
* 2 tablespoons of olive oil
* 2 tablespoons of Thai style sweet chili sauce
* juice and zest from one lime
* 1 teaspoon of minced garlic
* Lime wedges and coriander sprigs (for garnish)
* Lightly steamed vermicelli noodles
Directions
1. Preheat indoor grill until heating light turns off.
2. In a large mixing bowl combine octopus with oil, chili sauce, lime zest, juice and garlic. Toss well to combine and season with pepper.
3. Place octopus on pre-heated grill and lower press. Allow to cook for 3 minutes.
4. Remove from grill and serve on top of vermicelli noodles. Garnish with lime and coriander.

With the temperatures hovering near zero lately, I thought it a good idea to make a pot of chili. Winter comfort food at its finest!
Canned Amy's vegetarian chili, with a couple chopped green peppers and a chopped tomato. The tomatoes and peppers are veganic and from this week's CSA box. Served over organic basmati rice with a bottle of Sierra Nevada Anniversary Ale. The whole thing took me twenty minutes to make and, beer included, cost under five dollars.
