When you hear about the Coney Island culture in Detroit -- American and Lafayette, the dueling neighbors downtown, but also the ubiquity of Coney joints throughout the metropolitan area -- you're tempted to think that, man, Detroit sure does like its chili dogs. But that's not really it. It's just one slice of the notion that Detroit is a veritable mecca of casual dining. You can get a hot dog at any Coney place, and these downtown competitors specialize in them, but more broadly a Coney joint is a diner. The ones farther out serve anything and everything, including breakfast all day. They're diners, basically. As are the area's many slider emporiums. As are the area's many "family restaurants." As are the area's many "ham and corned beef" joints. And I'm not even getting into the pizza culture. You could gain a lot of weight for not a lot of money in the Motor City and its sprawling suburbs.
