Countdown to Lunar/Chinese new year 😁 🎉🐒🌾🎎🏮 (中国新年) .

Chanced upon this seacaost below the viewdeck of Batan Island, Batanes, Philippines.

Our front yard was a lake during the strong rains last night. The light is from the stret light shining on the puddle.

Added a lens flare above the light in the puddle and added a graduated texture to the image in Photoshop. Added a ghost border in ON1 Effects.

“Standing on the snow-covered plain, as if in a pasture amid the hills, I cut my way first through a foot of snow, and then a foot of ice, and open a window under my feet, where, kneeling to drink, I look down into the quiet parlour of the fishes, pervaded by a softened light as through a window of ground glass, with its bright sanded floor the same as in summer; there a perennial waveless serenity reigns as in the amber twilight sky, corresponding to the cool and even temperament of the inhabitants.

Heaven is under our feet as well as over our heads.”

“Learning became her.

She loved the smell of the book from the shelves, the type on the pages, the sense that the world was an infinite but knowable place.

Every fact she learned seemed to open another question, and for every question there was another book.”

— Robert Goolrick

Today. It just feels happy, doesn’t it?

Been wanting to shoot this sign forever. Made a special trip to get it. Great South O steak house - been there for years, though I've never been inside. Probably should before it goes away. Looks very old-school inside.

This one i really like, the compositional arrangement from the rocks to the trees have been designed as a central focal point. When I saw this particular tree all alone against the waves and rocks that seem to converge to it, i knew what I wanted. My only beef is the light. Big cumulus clouds blocked the sun thus a less dramatic light.

I couldn't resist snapping a few pictures this evening. I really liked the way the light was shining in my back porch. Silly me though, I didn't even take off my iPod before rushing to take the picture!

Padre Island is a most unusual beach. At least it was for me. I was there in October, and I was the ONLY one on the beach. I guess everyone went home, back to work or back to school. Obviously, this was good for me!

The long stretch of the Padre Island National Seashore is also unusual in that folks can drive their vehicles right down onto the beach. I'm not sure that I like that idea. I think I'd prefer that it stayed wild & uninhabited (at least by motorized vehicles anyway). And I couldn't do it myself because you really need a 4WD. Being so far from civilization, I didn't think it would be a good idea to bury my rental car in sand!!

Since I won't really get a beach vacation this summer, I am reliving the beach memories. I think everyone may have noticed a large amount of sea-themed images in my Photostream lately. Now you know why! ---> ◔◡◔

Sincerely,

A Beach Bum Wannabee

I'm so sorry I haven't been by everyone's Photostreams much lately ... pining for the sea, taking a Staycation Break (which just can't compare to the beach) ... working on my portfolio & revamping my resume. I will be catching up tonight & tomorrow my wonderful Flickr Peeps!.

"Be present. Make love. Make tea. Avoid small talk. Embrace conversation. Buy a plant, water it. Make your bed. Make someone else’s bed. Have a smart mouth, and quick wit. Run. Make art. Create. Swim in the ocean. Swim in the rain. Take chances. Ask questions. Make mistakes. Learn. Know your worth. Love fiercely. Forgive quickly. Let go of what doesn’t make you happy. Grow."

— Paulo Coelho

“Nietzsche also proposed a second kind of tourism, whereby we may learn how our societies and identities have been formed by the past and so acquire a sense of continuity and belonging.

The person practising this kind of tourism ‘looks beyond his own individual transitory existence and feels himself to be the spirit of his house, his race, his city’.

He can gaze at old buildings and feel ‘the happiness of knowing that he is not wholly accidental and arbitrary but grown out of a past as its heir, flower, and fruit, and that his existence is thus excused and indeed justified'.”

I arrived in San Diego last Thursday following a wild ride through the mountains (after leaving Joshua Tree National Park). Rachel had to work on Friday so I had a day to explore.

She texted me early Friday morning: "Are you watching the sunrise Moo?" The photo above is what greeted me in my hotel parking lot. No time to scout out the perfect sunrise spot; had to grab the shot right there ... and got exactly two! Isn't this so ridiculously what you think of when you think of California? This image is also for Sonora Guy. He seemed a bit peeved with the last shot I posted of snowy Colorado; seems he is fed up with the weather! I missed you my Flickr peeps ... but I didn't miss Windy, Cold Chicago!

~

♫ "Welcome to the hotel California ... such a lovely place ..." ♫

I yearned for snow, it came ... briefly ... and now my thoughts are drifting along to good times & warmer climes. It is such a dull, gray day today that I needed something warm to light up my day. Hope it warms up your day too! Isn't a sunset on the beach so cliché ?

Happy Cliché Saturday!

Loved the color of this sunset. The tiny bird silhouettes. The silence.

Time after time

Alone in the city of whirling blossoms

Those petals fly in the whirling wind

The miracle of meeting you

In a city where the wind whispered through

The hanamidou tells of the end of spring

One petal from this misty flower.

"Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass under trees on a summer's day, listening to the murmur of the water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is by no means a waste of time." —John Lubbock, The Use Of Life

A long stretch of U.S. Route 50 traverses Utah along a desolate portion of the Great Basin Desert. It is commonly referred to as the "Loneliest Road in America."

At the time, I was talking to the old man. He was telling me that he had made this colossal recipe of beef enchiladas. I was getting the entire recipe related to me in it's entirety. It was so lonely out there, all by myself ... that I was content to just tune in.

I finally had to 'tune out the food channel' when I saw this epic sunset unfolding over the desert swamp right before my eyes. I stopped in the middle of the road, left the car door open ... sat on the hood of my car ... and watched the sun set. Not one car passed by... the only sound I heard were the frogs.

We tend to celebrate light in our pictures. Understanding how light interacts with the camera is paramount to the work we do. The temperature, intensity and source of light can wield different photography effect on the same subject or scene; add ISO, aperture and speed, the camera, the lens type, focal length and filters…the combination is varied ad multi-layered and if you know how to use them all, you will come to appreciate that all lights are useful, even those surrounded by a lot of darkness.

We are guided by three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, our longing to capture in print, that which is beautiful, the constant search for the one picture, and constant barrage of new equipment and style of photography. These passions, like great winds, have blown us across the globe in search of the one and we do understand the one we do look for might be this picture right here for someone else out there.

“A concise poem about our work as stated elow

A place without being

a thought without thinking

creatively, two dimensions

suspended animation

possibly a perfect imitation

of what was then to see.

A frozen memory in synthetic colour

or black and white instead,

fantasy dreams in magazines

become imbedded inside my head.

Artistic views

surrealistic hues,

a photographer’s instinctive eye:

for he does as he pleases

up to that point he releases,

then develops a visual high.
