Walking on foot brings you down to the very stark, naked core of existence. We travel too much in airplanes and cars. It’s an existential quality that we are losing. It’s almost like a credo of religion that we should walk.

There is, of course, something inherently romantic—if not heroic—about the extreme solitary explorer enveloped by nature. The very image of Herzog on foot recalls the iconic 19th-century paintings of Caspar David Friedrich, especially his Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog, with its lone figure staring out at the wide vista above the clouds.

'Truth itself wanders through the forests,' Herzog writes near the end. Yet here he embroiders his memories for effect: The vast swath of geography between Munich and Paris is littered with industrial towns and cities.

Once he comes out on the other end, traversing the deforested Champs-Élysées (“We were close to what they call the breath of danger”), Herzog emerges victorious.

― Of Walking in Ice: (Munich-Paris, 23 November–14 December 1974)

As I was getting ready for work this morning I looked out and saw the most outrageously orange sky. As you can see from the photo, it had a wispy painterly look. Then I forgot about it until this evening. As I drove home, a storm was rolling in with high winds and wicked lightening. I remembered this image from this morning and thought of that quote. I much prefer the second half of that quote: "Red sky at night, sailor's delight" But of course I'm nowhere near the sea, or a lake for that matter.

This really isn't the best photo but it is the one I got and I'm going with it!

We tend to celebrate light in our pictures. Understanding how light interacts with the camera is paramount to the work we do. The temperature, intensity and source of light can wield different photography effect on the same subject or scene; add ISO, aperture and speed, the camera, the lens type, focal length and filters…the combination is varied ad multi-layered and if you know how to use them all, you will come to appreciate that all lights are useful, even those surrounded by a lot of darkness.

We are guided by three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, our longing to capture in print, that which is beautiful, the constant search for the one picture, and constant barrage of new equipment and style of photography. These passions, like great winds, have blown us across the globe in search of the one and we do understand the one we do look for might be this picture right here for someone else out there.

A place without being

a thought without thinking

possibly a perfect imitation

of what was then to see.

A frozen memory in synthetic colour

or black and white instead,

fantasy dreams in magazines

become imbedded inside my head.

surrealistic hues,

for he does as he pleases

up to that point he releases,

then develops a visual high.

Beauty isn't always found in obvious places

I have barely begun the process of going through my 7K+ collection of images. I had so many ideas for today's post ... but when I saw Irene's post of our epic sunset photoshoot at Baker Beach, and Char's post of our epic sunset photoshoot at the Berkeley Pier; I decided to go backwards and post my epic sunset shot at Pfeiffer Beach in Big Sur with Sarah P ... my last sunset of the trip.

More importantly, I want to dedicate this post to everyone who took care of me on my 16-Day California Safari. I am overwhelmed by the kindness of everyone ... meeting up with old friends ... and meeting new friends. This was the trip of a lifetime, and it wouldn't have been possible without them.

Last of all, I want to make a special dedication to a new friend, Aurelia. You are in my thoughts & prayers. {{hugs}} ♥♥♥

Happy Sliders {Sunset} Sunday!! I sure missed my Flickr peeps!

♫ Dream of Paradise ♫

All our wisdom is stored in the trees.” ― Santosh Kalwar

If I were to send you a postcard, I would try to write this sound. The way ice crashes into the water below like a wind-opened door in a blizzard. The uneven tempo of water flowing through multiple crevasses at once like overlaying courtyard fountains at dusk. The crunch of metal into steps like ice crackling in fresh lemonade. And the utter silence of awe, only marked by our own heartbeats.

|| Spent today hiking on Glaciar Perito Moreno. Glaciers, my friends. This is real life. And a fantastic way to end my trip. Patagonia has been good to me, and I'll definitely miss it. But I still have more to share.. ||

Eastern Oregon Adventure

May 6-9, 2016

The Sheep Rock unit is located along Oregon Route 19 and the John Day River upstream of the little community of Kimberly. This unit is mostly in Grant County, although a small part extends into Wheeler County. The Sheep Rock unit is further subdivided into the Mascall Formation Overlook, Picture Gorge, Cathedral Rock, Blue Basin, and the Foree Area. Some of these are separated from one another by farms, ranches, and other parcels of land that are not part of the park but all are close enough together so that they can all be visited within a reasonable time frame.

One of the most beautiful scenic route of John Day, passing along the river. Our four days isn't enough, wish we had a week of adventure there to explore the whole eastern high desert scenes.

Jackie and I loaded up our bikes and left the house at 4:30 AM; all bright-eyed and bush-tailed! We headed into Chicago for the "Bike the Drive" fund raising event.

For this event, Lake Shore Drive is closed down; and this year, 20,000+ bikers participated! It is an awe-inspiring sight to see so many bikers wheeling down Lake Shore Drive!

But seeing the sun rise up over Lake Michigan is the big bonus for me; which is why this photo was my favorite of the day! It was a wonderful day to ride with the temps in the upper 70s, lower 80s. Last year, it was in the 30s with a bone chilling head wind off the lake. We were done with the ride and home by 9:00 AM!!
