I *know* this is totally uncool, especially because I have been off and on so much this year and because I put it in all the groups that are the coolest ;) But this is important.
Remember her? Well she's shaving her head to raise money for St.Baldricks again this year!! (Joey wants to keep her hair and grow it) I was so stunned when she said she wanted to do it again., I even tried to talk her out of it. But she has a mind of her own and she wants to help the world. Actually her words "I am going to change the world Mom" Her character stuns me. She is an 8 yo girl in a world where mean girls and cliques and GASP boys surround her already and yet she shows so much bravery and conviction. I hope one day I can grow up to be just like her.
So if you could spare even just a $1.00, I would you owe you everything to see that smile she has when she checks her page.
(FTR, I'm shaving too ;) but I haven't raised anything compared to her.)
I don't know if you remember last year but their school broke a record and raised $89,000. when all was said and done. Well this year we have already raised $88,000 and there is still a week to go. There are close to 100 shavees, in a small school. The goal is 100k. Do you realize how many kids that will help?!

In the 1960s, many bus operators realised that the spiral of higher costs leading to higher fares, leading to fewer passengers, had to be addressed. This meant experiments aimed at attracting passengers back to buses, making the service not just reliable but faster, more comfortable and - well, just more modern.
One of the operators at the forefront of this move was Manchester City Transport. The new initiatives included automatic fare collection equipment, buses with separate entrances and exits to speed boarding at busy centre stops, and a bright new red and white livery.
Many bus enthusiasts in Manchester think of the revolutionary 'Mancunian' bus, and the first Mancunian, 1001, is now in the Museum of Transport Greater Manchester. But actually they weren't Manchester's first move in this direction - in the previous months, Manchester took delivery of almost thirty Leyland 'Panther' buses and we see one of them here being inspected by MCT managers.
The gentleman on the right is Ralph Bennett, the General Manager of Manchester and the driving force behind the new direction. And who do we see on the step but Roy Hattersley MP, at the time a junior minister in the Ministry of Labour.
The bus was in the modern, light livery - in fact, red and cream which was changed later to red and white - and you can just see a sign telling intending passengers that there was a turnstile on board, which would only allow passengers to move through if they put money in a slot.
The livery was a success but the turnstiles were unreliable and were soon done away with - as, actually, were the Leyland Panthers which did not last as long as desired and were sold off after a few years.

Experiencing the changing of the seasons has never been as exciting as it has this year -- I have a sneaking suspicion that is because it's my first fall with a DSLR! Mother Nature has sure put her best foot forward this year for me (LOOK at that wonderful palette of colors). I got my SLR almost a year ago now...I can definitely see how much I have learned this last year.
** I'm grinning from ear to ear tonight. My last photo made Explore...I didn't even like it but uploaded it anyway! It's only my 5th photo to make it, so it's still something that excites me :) More importantly, I got a 2 1/2 hour skype (webcam) date with my husband tonight <3 <3

Climate Corporate Governance for Financial Institutions - Building resilience to climate change risk
During the past decade, with extreme weather causing hundreds of USD billions of
losses per year and the changing climate intensifying the adverse effects of wasteful
practices, environmental considerations have overtaken economic concerns as the
main sources of global risk, according to the World Economic Forum.
Financial regulators and the European Union are responding with recommendations
and guidance on the disclosure of climate-related financial risks to help integrate
sustainability into investor portfolio management. Credit rating agencies are
developing new ways to anticipate how climate-related risks could impact businesses
and financial institutions.
But is this enough?
To assess whether the financial sector is adequately equipped, the EBRD is brought
together representatives from financial institutions to share their practical experience
of the ‘what’ and ‘how’ of climate-related risk management.
The event discuseed ways to achieve an effective investor-led climate response
via climate corporate governance, standards-based climate finance, climate risk
management, climate-related capital market products.

This was one of over 7,000 climate action events taking place in in 188 countries around the world on 10/10/10 as part of “The Global Work Party.” This synchronized international event is organized by 350.org, and is expected to be the largest day of environmental activism in history.

Hogg takes command of U.S. Army Africa

VICENZA, Italy – During a ceremony today at Caserma Ederle’s Hoekstra Field, Maj. Gen. David R. Hogg assumed command of U.S. Army Africa.
Gen. William E. Ward, commanding general of U.S. Africa Command presided over the ceremony, which signaled the departure of outgoing commander, Maj. Gen. William B. Garrett III.
Hogg, who recently served as deputy commanding general of Combined Security Transition Command-Afghanistan, said he is delighted to become part of the Vicenza military community.
“After 29 years of service and six overseas assignments to include Germany, Panama and Belgium, this is our first opportunity to be in Italy,” Hogg said. “We are absolutely thrilled to be here.”
Hogg said he is excited to be a part of U.S. Army Africa, the Army's newest service component command, challenged with developing relationships with land forces in Africa and supporting U.S. Army efforts on the African continent.
Ward reminded the crowd that U.S. Army Africa has accomplished some great things since Dec. 2008, when it began its transformation to becoming the Army service component command for U.S. Africa Command.
“In that short time, the command has formed, grown, and matured into an active and effective outfit and has established strong strategic relationships with the ground forces in Africa,” Ward said. “U.S. Army Africa not only succeeded, they excelled. In fact, they thrived on the opportunities they were given.”
Garrett took command of the Southern European Task Force in 2008. He commanded SETAF throughout its transformation to U.S. Army Africa. Garrett now heads to Iraq, where he will serve as the chief of staff, U.S. Forces Iraq.
“We look forward to building upon the systems that Maj. Gen. Garrett and Mrs. Garrett have developed,” Hogg said. “We are truly thankful for the warm welcome that we have received from the community and, especially, the Garretts.”

We stayed in Wanaka two nights and it was lovely and sunny and very warm... didn't want to head home again!
Lake Wanaka is located in the Otago region of New Zealand, at an altitude of 300 metres. Covering an area of 192 km2 (74 sq mi),[citation needed] it is New Zealand's fourth largest lake, and estimated to be more than 300 m (980 ft) deep. Its name is Māori, a corruption of Oanaka ('The place of Anaka', a local tribal chief).
Wanaka is a town on the lake with which it shares its name.
Lake Wanaka lies at the heart of the Otago Lakes in the lower South Island of New Zealand. The township is situated in a glacier carved basin on the shores of the lake and is the gateway to Mt Aspiring National Park. Lake Hāwea is a 15 minute drive away, en route to the frontier town of Makarora, the last stop before the West Coast Glacier region. To the south is the historic Cardrona Valley, offering an alpine route to neighbouring Queenstown.
At its greatest extent, which is roughly along a north-south axis, the lake is 42 kilometres long. Its widest point, at the southern end, is 10 kilometres. The lake's western shore is lined with high peaks rising to over 2000 metres above sea level. Along the eastern shore the land is also mountainous, but the peaks are somewhat lower.
Wanaka lies in a u-shaped valley formed by glacial erosion during the last ice age, more than 10,000 years ago. It is fed by the Matukituki- and Makarora Rivers, and is the source of the Clutha River. Nearby Lake Hāwea lies in a parallel valley carved by a neighbouring glacier eight kilometres to the east. At their closest point (a rocky ridge called The Neck), the lakes are only 1,000 metres apart.
Numerous small islands (notably Ruby Island, Stevensons Island and Harwich Island) are to be found at the southern end of the lake, with some now serving as ecological sanctuaries, for example for buff weka in case of Stevensons Island. The only flat land around the lake is also to be found here, surrounding the outflow into the Clutha River. The towns of Wanaka and Albert Town are situated here.

I haven't been posting because my brain is tied up in redecorating the bedroom. This duvet cover from Dwell Studio caught my eye while I was at Target the other day and started the whole process. My previous photo must have been my inspiration- probably because I was so excited it made Explore the image was stuck in my brain. I have lots to finish up and will post more photos when it's completed. :)
Sadly, Poltz is almost too big for the changing table. What a fatty.
This is where Poltz hangs out during the day. It's a real good time to enter the nursery with a crying baby who wants his diaper changed in one hand and have to shoo away a 17 lb. cat with the other.
he surprised me with his discussion of the ice and water cycle and reversible change......we had not discussed this in a year?
we were outside and some icicles fell and he wanted to bring in snow, so i brought in some icicles for a lesson in volume, but he turned it into reversible change
he was also discussing how to save the icicles, we should put them in the fridge......i told him the fridge was not cold enough, he said, "well we could try and see if it works! natural icicle popsicle"
we were discussing the icicles outside so when i broke some off, i decided to bring some in to show him the volume of water contained as it melted.....he ended up showing me, how to use it as a lens/prism.......a wand, a lesson in reversible change and then breaking off pieces and blowing them in pools of water with his breath....wind energy.....he knows way more than me!
I was watching pbs kids with him recently and realized.....this was something he learned from sid the science kid......reversible change......but i swear he had not seen the show in at least 6 months....then about a month after i videotaped this we saw the episode again......aha moment

great show and channel, pbs kids, no commercials, lots of music and physical activity encouraged during the shows and this particular show is called sid the science kid.....perfect age appropriate science investigation encouragement, i see lots of long lasting learning from the 30 minutes he sees maybe 2x a week
A change-over complete, the relief driver prepares to start out as two others sit and await their charges at Brandon Terrace, Canonmills. This has been the change-over point for Lothian's service 27 since 1969, and more recently for service 23.
Gemini 357 is part of a newish batch of vehicles delegated to services 4, 5, 19, 23 and 27 though in reality can be found on any route as the enthusiasm for 'branded buses' has somewhat diminished in recent times. The driver will go north past the Botanic Gardens to the typically suburban Silverknowes, where after a lay-over he'll return on the uphill climb to the city and onwards to Hunter's Tryst.
Not a lot changes down the years in these back alleys, or Tenfoots that run between the terraced houses in the Southern end of Gainsborough: the occasional gate may be replaced, a wall or outhouse rebuilt (or demolished), and the roadway re-tarmac'd, but it all basically stays the same. Here, even the 1950s concrete street lamp looks the same as I recall 30 or more years ago, though I think it is now a Mercury vapour lamp, where once it was the comforting yellow glow of a Sodium lamp.
