Ship Chandlers Warehouse is de oudste winkel in
Amsterdam en ligt aan de Geldersekade nummer 8, vlak
bij de Schreierstoren. Ship Chandlers Warehouse is het
enige pand in Amsterdam dat nog op alle verdiepingen
de originele glas-in-loodramen uit de 17de eeuw heeft.
In 1775 werd de trapgevel vervangen en boven de deur
een rococo ornament aangebracht met een tabakspot en
enkele tabaksbladen. In 1973 zijn de houten
funderingspalen vervangen door 22 betonnen palen.
Het huis werd in 1623 gebouwd. Beneden was een tabakswinkel, en boven werd de bevoorrading
van de schepen besteld. Kleine schepen brachten de bestelling van de Geldersekade naar de grote
schepen in de haven.
De Ship Chanders Warehouse begon als tabakswinkel. Rondom Amsterdam waren in die tijd wel
50 tabakskwekerijen. Men rookte de tabak in dunne witte Goudse pijpen, gemaakt van klei. Pas als
sigaren hun intrede doen, raken pijpen uit de mode en verdwijnt deze Hollandse tabaksindustrie.
In 1804 werd het pand gekocht door Jan Vinke uit Overijssel. Hij begon een kruidenierswinkel en
gaf het pand zijn huidige naam, die op de gevel werd aangebracht. Hij ging met zijn gezin boven de
winkel wonen, en beneden verkocht hij alles wat schepen nodig hadden voor hun lange reizen.
Vinke maakte fortuin, en in 1860 richtte Albertus Vinke vanuit deze winkel de cargadoorsfirma
Vinke & Co. op. Zijn schepen dreven handel in verre landen. Er kwamen Vinke & Co -kantoren in
Rotterdam, Antwerpen en Zuid-Afrika. Ook de panden naast de Geldersekade werden bijgekocht.
Na 1897 voerde het bedrijf de directie over de N.V. Stoomvaart Maatschappij Oostzee (1897 -
1985), de N.V. Stoomvaart Maatschappij Hillegersberg (1905 - 1968), de N.V. Houtvaart (1910 -
1972) en de N.V. Nederlandse Maatschappij voor de Walvisvaart (1946 - 1966).
In de jaren dertig groeide Vinke & Co uit tot een van de belangrijkste trampvaartrederijen in
Nederland en kwam de handel van hout uit Noorwegen op gang. De rederij hield zich bezig met
scheepsbevrachtingen, agenturen, verzekeringen, reizen en scheepsmanagement. Daarnaast was
zij consul voor diverse landen. Tot 1980 bleef Vinke rederij- en cargadoorsbedrijf, maar in 1985
werden alle activiteiten gestaakt en alle schepen verkocht.

Ship Chandlers Warehouse is the oldest store in Amsterdam. The house was built in 1623. Downstairs was a tobacconist, and the supplies and equipment for ships were ordered upstairs.

This week is the 2009 Weimaraner Nationals in Olympia Washington. It has been down pouring here all week & we finally got a short burst of sun this evening so we went out to take a few shots with Chandler. Chandler is just starting to do Jr. Handling & has been helping out Lylah's handler with several of her dogs. he is pictured here with Lylah.
What a good looking team huh? :)

this little girl is my neighbor and i took this picture back in february. now she is 3 years old and today she was diagnosed with leukemia, she goes for her first chemotherapy session wednesday. this is ridiculously upsetting for me and i really hope she will be okay.
Not much happening on the cut this late morning/lunchtime. However, determined to put my camera to use, here`s an alternative look at Braunston Chandlers.

This picture was taken there my swans picture were. They are taken at Sprague's Maple Farms.
There food is great.
Rail replacement services at Basingstoke today (15/01/2023) produced a bumper crop of operators using vehicles from at least 16 different manufacturers with 25 different body types on show.
Our new home is an apartment on the ground floor of the red brick building in the foreground of the picture.
It is like living in a luxurious house boat.......a small work of Architectural Genius, the layout a feast of reason, the craftsmanship has the Yankee integrity missing in New York rentals. The floors gleam blondly, the walls are a lustrous slightly textured enameled white, a canvas for the refracting light of the rippling water directly beneath windows in all rooms, living room, office, and bedroom.
All rooms face East in a solid brick house right on a pier, only a narrow wooden ramp to moor boats separates us from the waters of Casco Bay.
AND then there is the pageantry of activities outside the windows .......our windows open to the hub of sightseeing from the harbour of "Old Port".
The ferry, offering whale watch and island tours, looks like a children's book illustration and we can hear the rap of the guide on a megaphone as they pass by. The channels between the fingers of piers rimming "Old Port" are quite narrow, the ferry can JUST turn around.
Also, our windows are almost sound proof, so we can listen to live concerts at a shore line pub, at will. They fill the evening with energy and celebration - and do not last too late. Night is silent.......morning peaceful. Winter will bring another world, this is a burst of activity that only North Country enjoys.

Chandler is a city in Maricopa County, Arizona, United States, and a suburb of the Phoenix, Arizona, Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA). It is bordered to the north and west by Tempe, to the north by Mesa, to the west by Phoenix, to the south by the Gila River Indian Community, and to the east by Gilbert.
While snapping shots of these displays at the lantern festival, I happened to capture a fiery sunset sky as well. 😁
