Okay, so I gave this recipe a fair shot - two in fact, even using the strange pan size called for! The first time when the timer first went off, the loaf looked (and tested) completely RAW. I stuck it back in at 5 minute intervals, and finally after an extra 20 a tester came out clean. Good thing too, because the top was almost burnt. I left it to cool as directed, coming back exactly 10 minutes later to find the loaf nothing more than a crater. Underneath the top 1 1/2 cm or so was nothing but batter.

So, I tried again (don't know why), adding more flour even though the initial dough resembled my go-to recipe's makeup. The same thing happened - at least 15 extra minutes in the oven, a hard top crust (though I tented it with foil halfway through baking) and nothing but goo in the bottom half. Sorry Anna, I love your shows and I'm definitely visiting your bakery this summer, but your written recipes stink in the home kitchen.

Le Castellet (83), septembre 2010

The old right-of-way was turned into parkland, seen here south from Montrose Avenue. It continues to Irving Park Road. It's named Challenger Park; I'm not sure if this is in honor of the STS-51-L astronauts.

EDIT: Apparently it is.

Challenge 5: The Klum of Doom

Challenge: Design a look for Heidi Klum to wear to the Creative Arts Emmy Awards.

Designer: Brie

Model: Heidi

This week's model is the Barbie that I think looks most like Heidi Klum. I took apart one of my daughter's play dresses that was falling apart at the seams to create this hot pink gown with sparkles at the shoulder. I would have preferred beading, but my beads seem to be mia. My gown is an off the shoulderesque with a plunging back.

It's just a safe design, but it is finished. As you can tell, the dress and doll are being snatched before I can finish taking pictures of them.

Other tangles used - Nzeppel, Flux, Striping, Strircles, Nightsbridge

At the Soldier First Responder/Communications lane of the Neel Challenge on Aug. 4, new cadets from 2nd Squad, 2nd Platoon, Company A are tested in a scenario where a presence patrol is attacked and sustained casualties. The new cadets must move tactically into position to perform medical aid on the wounded (head and leg wounds) while establishing a perimeter to fend off further attacks. An ASIP radio must be assembled and a frequency loaded to communicate a report. The Neel Challenge is the culminating military skills test for the Class of 2015, named in honor of 1st Lt. Phillip Neel, a Class of 2005 graduate who was killed April 2007 while supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom. It's still raining here most of the time but today I was lucky to get some sunshine. Now it's raining again. I really hope for a better summer soon.

feb challenge: redo a stock outfit. i chose happy harbor.

this was a great challenge. i had a grand plan: a navy peacoat, perhaps a knit stripey fitted boatneck sweater, definitely a white pencil skirt (a la women's navy uniform). but then i couldn't find buttons tiny for the coat (you see pins standing in for buttons) and couldn't find a fabric store with plain white cotton or ANYTHING non-silky/slinky/shiny. so i made a ribbon skirt with the help of good ol' aleene's tacky glue. i decided i wanted a fitted coat, so i nixed the sweater and was gonna do a cute "tatoo" (on magic tape, for this purpose) on her collarbone. and i forgot the tape at work.

so last night i was frustrated and avoided working on it. and today i kinda gave up on making anything good come of it.

and then my camera battery was dead. so it was photobooth and holding miss vesta at the right angle to get in the frame. argh.

totally didn't come together. and my mailed packet for the march challenge is AWOL. i fear i'm not going to do so well.

argh
