My Lewis Winch hooked up to oak tree by means of strap, chain, and shackle. Cable runs out to snatch block (beefy pulley) attached to the large rock I had just pulled from roadside, then back again to hook onto chain, effectively doubling the pulling force while halving the speed the load is pulled. Shown with a small borrowed chainsaw hooked up.
By removing the normal bar and cutting chain from the saw and attaching it by means of a small adapter bar and non-cutting chain you can provide power to the winch. It's a much more portable setup than trying to haul batteries and an electric winch. With snatch block and a 7-HP saw you can pull up to 4.5 tons.

Posing with a new chainsaw a Stihl MAGNUM MS-660 with a "small" 28 inch bar. A beautifully balanced saw weighing in at 16 pounds. Personally, I think Stihl saws are the best around, look at any tree service company and chances are they are behind a Stihl saw!
