Using chainsaw, chisel and grinder, Ron Cowan has made a name for himself sculpting faces in old barn beams, stumps, and logs.
One of Cowan’s pieces can be found in the city harbor, a seven figure sculpture that slowly disappears beneath the Atlantic tide each day. The artist spent three months placing the pieces in the old cribbing remains of a ship building pier as part of Belfast’s annual Arts in the Park event. Titled “The Long Breath,” the attraction was so popular the city purchased the pieces from Cowan at the end of the summer.

I wander a lot and often find things in the woods. Usually those things are plants and animals but sometimes I find things on the trailside that surprise and delight me. I noticed a dead tree with its bark missing and thinking it might be ready to fall I thought I would investigate. That is when I noticed that it had already been topped. Then I thought “why would you top a tree and leave a 12 foot stump. Why not remove it entirely. As I approached the other side I found my answer.
"A growling sound somewhat resembling a chainsaw being revved up."
"Die tiefen Rufe des Papageitauchers klingen wie „orr…o-o“ oder „arr…ha-ha“, sind in der Tonhöhe fallend oder steigend und ähneln so dem Knarren einer rostigen Türangel."

The Chainsaw Vigilante is a recurring villain/anti-villain/anti-hero from Ben Edlunds renowned parody superhero comic book series The Tick. He is less emotionally stable than most of the vigilantes in the City and Deertown, but he is not a murderer so long as he can help it. After terrorizing the Tick and other superheroes in the City and Deertown, the Chainsaw Vigilante eventually partially reformed and became a true anti-hero in his own spinoff series.
