A triple CG (Cloud to Ground) lightning strike near West Pier, Brighton. Captured in a single 15 second exposure.

The West Pier is a pier in Brighton, England. It was designed by Eugenius Birch, opening in 1866 and closing in 1975. The pier was the first to be Grade I listed in Britain but has become increasingly derelict since closure.

The pier was constructed during a boom in pleasure pier building in the 1860s, and was designed to attract tourism in Brighton. It was the town's second pier, joining the Royal Suspension Chain Pier of 1823. It was extended in 1893, and a concert hall was added in 1916. The pier reached its peak attendance during this time, with 2 million visitors between 1918 and 1919. Its popularity began to decline after World War II, and concerts were replaced by a funfair and tearoom. A local company took ownership in 1965, but could not meet the increased maintenance cost, and ultimately filed for bankruptcy. They could not find a suitable buyer, so the pier closed in 1975 and subsequently fell into disrepair.

The West Pier Trust now owns the pier and has proposed various plans to renovate it. Some schemes have been opposed by local residents and the owners of the nearby Palace Pier, who have claimed unfair competition. The pier gradually collapsed during the early 21st century. Major sections collapsed in late 2002, and two fires in March and May 2003 left little of the original structure. Subsequently, English Heritage declared it to be beyond repair. Structured demolition took place in 2010 to make way for the observation tower i360; further structural damage from storms has occurred since.

Lightning is a sudden electrostatic discharge during an electrical storm between electrically charged regions of a cloud (called intra-cloud lightning or IC), between that cloud and another cloud (CC lightning), or between a cloud and the ground (CG lightning). The charged regions in the atmosphere temporarily equalize themselves through this discharge referred to as a strike if it hits an object on the ground, and a flash if it occurs within a cloud. Lightning causes light in the form of plasma, and sound in the form of thunder. Lightning may be seen and not heard when it occurs at a distance too great for the sound to carry as far as the light from the strike or flash.

Right place, right time. I captured a positive earth discharge from the top part of storm cloud over Wrocław, Poland. It was so bright I had to turn down the highlights by almost 90%.

For you lovers of diesels that are ugly, here is one sitting at Consolidated Grain and Barge at Shattuck, Oklahoma on 10-09-2020. This EMD GP38 was purchased by the Southern and sold by the Norfolk Southern to MPRX. I never did find a barge or a body of water to hold one here however!! 1217

To tease her little brother, of course. Even more fun when done through a window.

Does this bring back memories?

Played with exposure doing these, and thought the high key worked better.

A MUST for pressing L - Thank you!!!

The stories of the girl who pushed a baby carriage left on the tracks just in time to save it from a passing train. The story that the girl was killed but the baby survived? The stories of the girl's screams still heard by locals? The stories of, well, other things, like something that does not like anything stopping on the tracks.

Have you heard this particular story? A neighbor's daughter, Amber, grew up with my granddaughter Becca, spending much time playing at our house. Amber is an excellent student and is the kind of daughter any parents would love to have.

Amber and four other girls wanted to test the stories of Munger Road. After all, there is hardly a local teenager who hasn't wanted to. Last year, the girls drove to this crossing late at night, a little apprehensive because of the signs warning that low slung vehicles are in danger of being hung up on the tracks.

The girls reached this spot and stopped, putting the auto into neutral. One girl got out and sprinkled baby powder onto the trunk and bumper on the rear of the car, and returned inside. According to Amber, it then started, the shaking of the car, as is something (or someone) were trying to push it off the tracks. After a bit, the shaking stopped. The girls got out holding flashlights (torches to you Brits) and, looking at the back of the car, were amazed a what they saw - - human hand prints on the baby powder. Terrified, the girls piled into the vehicle and sped away.

To this day, Amber refuses to go anywhere near to Munger Road.

Have you heard the stories of......Munger Road?

Have you stopped on the tracks? Can you see the train? Can you hear the screams?

They are just stories. Right? What does Google tell you?

My final assignment in my Visual Photography course is to tell a story with five photographs. I hope the story is clear and enjoyable enough.

It was a very difficult thing to do, and I challenge you all to try this fun project.

And thank you for your visit and thoughts.

I know that technically this isn't the best, but it makes a point. In the USA, people are very media aware. As soon as a camera is seen, their demeanor changes and they begin assuming unusual poses and expressions, especially when taking selfies.

I can remember when people were much less media savvy and tended to ignore video recording devices.

Can you remember the same?

Is it the same in other countries?

p.s. Thank you for the 150,000 views. One purpose of an image is to be seen. Thank you for doing that.
