I’m not into killing creatures for sport but when I was informed of the damage Lionfish are doing to our coral reefs I decided to get my spear-hunting certification in St. Lucia.
Lionfish are an invasive species in our waters and have a negative impact on native species and habitat. Divers are encouraged to remove Lionfish to help limit negative impacts to native marine life and ecosystems. Basically there is a bounty on their heads.
Lionfish are beautiful and venomous. Stings may cause temporary paralysis, nausea, dizziness, and a headache. If the venom spreads rapidly, or if you're unable to control swelling, another complication is tissue death due to decreased blood flow. This tends to happen in the fingertips.
My instructor was St. Lucian native Simeon who was an excellent teacher. In two hours of hunting I was able to get 16 Lionfish which he cleaned and took home to his family. He said they are great as sushi or grilled.

At the Courtyard Marriott-University of Delaware in Newark, 15 students from UD’s Career & Life Studies Certificate (CLSC) program gathered Wednesday, Oct. 17, to participate in career-building experiences during Delaware’s Disability Mentoring Day. The students had breakfast and heard from previous participants about the experiences they had in the program.
The students then transitioned to work sites in the Newark area for job-shadowing experiences. Sites the student went to were: VCA Newark Animal Hospital, Casino at Delaware Park (Security), WVUD radio, Ricciardi Brothers, Fair Hill (Md.) State Park, UD Office of Education Technology, Gambles Florist, STAR Nurse Managed Primary Care Clinic, Trilogy Salon, Newark Police Department, Brewed Awakenings, U.S. Sen. Chris Coons’ office, the Disability Law Center, Bancroft Construction and Veterinary Specialty Center.
Following their experiences at the job sites, the students and their mentors returned to the Marriott for lunch and a panel discussion.
Disability Mentoring Day is a national program, and in Delaware, the collaboration involves several agencies, educational institutions, business groups, and organizations, including the University of Delaware’s Center for Disabilities Studies, which started the first Disability Mentoring Day in Delaware nine years ago. Joining the collaboration are the Department of Health and Social Services (DHSS), the Department of Labor’s Division of Vocational Rehabilitation, the Department of Education, the New Castle County Transition Committee, the Delaware Business Leadership Network and Easterseals of Delaware & Maryland Eastern Shore.
The group is co-chaired by two young people with disabilities – Alyssa Cowin, an operations support specialist with DHSS, and Julia Hensley, who is working through Easterseals at Victory Fellowship Church.
