A mesmerizing star trail composition capturing Earth's rotation above this ancient lavoir (washing place). Long exposure photography reveals the graceful arcs of starlight streaming across the night sky, framed by silhouetted trees standing sentinel over the weathered stone basins below.

Technical Details:

- Long exposure star trail photography

- Night photography with ambient ground lighting

- Natural framing using surrounding foliage

I see the light shinin' through the rain

A thousand colors in a brighter shade

Needed to rise from the lowest place

There's a silver lining that surrounds the grey

When I get lost, will it come back around?

Things don't look up when you're goin' down

I know your arms, they are reachin' out

From somewhere beyond the clouds

Pioneer Park is a city park located in St. George, UT. It is a City of St. George park that has been left in a natural state. The sandstone cliffs remain as they would have millions of years ago. There isn't any grass or non-native planting. Lastly, the park overlooks the city of St. George. If a photographer were to carefully photograph this location it could be mistaken for a remote sandstone cliff in the middle of the southern Utah desert. For that reason, I like to photograph this location when I need to get a little photography practice in.

I can read as many books about photography theories or read about a certain location as much as I want but if I never get out to actually do photography I would never be able to perfect my craft. For that reason, I have kind of made Pioneer Park one of my go to spots for practice. It's easily accessible, it has many natural features and offers many grand vistas that are perfect for landscape photography. The ease of access to Pioneer Park offers me the chance to actually do photography instead of being an armchair photographer.

I know my portfolio is filled with mainly U.S. southwest images. In particular, my portfolio consist of many sandstone images. Don't blame me for that because that is what is around me. I wouldn't mind visiting the U.S. Pacific northwest or even certain locations on the U.S. east coast for photography but having a young family and a limited budget makes traveling very difficult.

This is a “practice” image shot at Pioneer Park. The image shows a natural sandstone arch that is perched on top of a sandstone cliff. I happened to have shot this image the day the Venus occultation occurred, which was Monday, December 7th. It's an unusual celestial event thats occurs when the moon passes in front of Venus. It was visible during the early morning hours as the sun was rising. Venus appeared as a bright dot adjacent to the moon.

It's not very visible but in my image you will see a bright speck next to the moon. That is Venus. I had to enhance Venus a little bit to make it appear brighter. I actually didn't know the Venus occultation event was occurring. I decided at the last minute to get up early before work to get photography practice in. Had I lived somewhere else and didn't have ease of access to a great photography location; I would not have captured this event.

I've embraced the natural beauty around my hometown and shot many locations that aren't very familiar to many people. Practice makes perfect. I'm far from perfect but at least I can try as close as possible to attain that level. If I actually do photography now and practice, then when I get the chance; I can make those beautiful images of those familiar scenes. Besides, why would I not want to embrace the natural beauty of Southern Utah. Trust me. Many photographers would die to be based from St. George and have an entire portfolio consisting of mainly southern Utah and U.S. southwest photography.

Arcturus is the fourth brightest star that can be seen from Central Maryland. Its orange-glow was high in the sky this morning.

Less known is the cute little asterism that is next to it. It goes by Picot 1, Napoleon's Hat, The Celestial Inchworm, the Celestial Slinky and likely other names as well.

An asterism is nothing more than a chance alignment of stars. Being an entomologist, I would of course lean towards calling it the Celestial Inchworm.

Mark and Megan have been working a lot on NASA's Celestial immunity experiment, including weekends. This is one of the reasons I like making timelapses, it compresses hours of work into a short video (also once the camera is set up we can let it be it and do said work). Together with solid support from mission control and scientists on ground, Mark and Megan have been working in the Life Sciences Glovebox in the Japanese Kibo laboratory to run this experiment. They are taking immune cells from elderly people and adults and seeing how they react to being on the International Space Station. This could offer clues to the whole ageing process in general and continues on ground-breaking research in space that is helping us understand the human body in detail. Like much human research in space it capitalises on the fact that cells seem to age faster offering a handy way for researchers to observe changes but sped up. Mark is doing the experiment in the Glovebox so the cells are contained, we do many biological or chemical experiments in gloveboxes for extra safety. youtu.be/vNS_sEfgvdI

Captured on the Evish Road, Strabane, County Tyrone Ireland.

Its not every day you get to see a beautiful sunrise in Ireland, as you all know Ireland is famous for its rain and overcast sky's but just by pure luck I got up this morn at 6:40 and looked out and seen the sky starting to erupt so I ran grabbed my camera, jumped in the car and sped up the road to find this freshly cut field. I think it really captured the true Ireland and just at the end of summer to.
