We sail through endless skies

Stars shine like eyes

The black night sighs

The Moon in silver dreams

Falls down in beams

Light of the night

The Earth, a purple blaze

Of sapphire haze

In orbit always

While down below

The trees

Bathed in cool breeze

Silver starlight

Breaks dawn from night

And so we pass on by

The crimson eye of great god Mars

As we travel the universe

I see the bad MOON a-rising

I see trouble on the way

I see earthquakes and lightning

I see bad times today

Don't go 'round tonight

Well, it's bound to take your life

There's a bad MOON on the rise

I hear hurricanes a-blowing

I know the end is coming soon

I fear rivers over flowing

I hear the voice of rage and ruin

Don't go 'round tonight

Well, it's bound to take your life

There's a bad MOON on the rise

The photocell—part of the complex way in which the portable CD player translated bumps and grooves on a CD into 0s and 1s, which were then changed to something analog and then to sound waves, then amplified through the headphones to come out as... MUSIC!

No clue how that all worked; I read a quick blurb on Wikipedia or How-To... But this is one of the ways we are able to carry around a full orchestra in a pocket.

Technics SL-P720 CD player

New acquisition from eBay to complement a very old CD player, both with Burr-Brown Digital to Analog converters, see : flic.kr/p/hBrZZ4

Above is the inside of the Denon CD-655 from the late 90s, a super low distortion and high signal to noise ratio CD player which uses 2 x PCM1702 DACs from Burr-Brown. The 20-bit PCM1702 was a really interesting DAC which spawned a bunch of follow-ons using the same architecture. Early R-2R ladder DACs suffered from some noise at low levels due to the Most Significant Bit current source turning on at the lowest volume output point. Multi-bit DACs had significantly higher performance than the early 1-bit and "MASH" DACs, but had this one flaw.

The PCM1702 was effectively two 19-bit DACs in a complementary design which negated the zero cross point issue. They had all the benefits of R-2R ladder DACs and now removed the other issue.

Denon must have persuaded Burr-Brown to test a higher grade spec than the datasheet. The datasheet has -J and -K options, but not -L. I remember many years ago, when I was in Burr-Brown, Linn asking us to create a higher grade audio DAC for them at final test. However they were only going to buy a small number so we said no. Denon would have had much more clout in the late 90s.

A few months back I decided to create a hi-fi system in a much bigger room in my house. I bought a new turntable (Pro-Ject Debut III SE) and a set a Tannoy floorstander speakers. Rather than spend another large bunch of money I decided to go for used equipment. I bought a Philips FA930 amplifier which came out in the 90s. It had superb specs, better than some top end amplifiers in Hi-Fi mags today, and kind of like new Marantz 6006 UK Edition, but with a bunch of extra features for the time, and more power. Philips and Marantz were always one and the same anyway. I paid <1/10 of what a new price would be.

Same with the Denon CD player, although DAC technology has moved on further than amplifier technology (Class-D amplifiers extant). The output buffer amps on the PCM1702-Ls are ultra wideband low noise operational amplifiers from NEC, so you could argue that the noise performance on buffer amps has not yet been beaten. In effect I paid less than 1/10 again of what I would pay for new today with only negligible (if any) benefits. I also looked at the 900 series CD players from Philps from the same era as my FA930 amp, but the performance was terrible, due primarily to the fact Philips had used their own 1-bit sigma delta DAC, which gave really poor performance.

I went down the shape route, lots of circles here. Great album, Stevie McCrorie's Big World - he won BBC's Voice competition last year, so talented, fantastic voice, not a cover version to be found on his album, just his own songs that tell of his life and his loves, brilliant.

Caravan is the house band this morning.

State of the art stereo equipment circa 1985. I'm pretty sure there hasn't been a tape in it for 15+ years! I couldn't even get it to open for this shot. The CD player above it is still in use, but the tuner below hasn't been used in ages, either. Below that are vinyl albums which are making a comeback, although not so much at my house!

This is the non-B variant of the Marantz 2235, a mid range receiver from 1976-7. A true vintage Japanese receiver (Marantz was originally an american company, but by the 70s the production had moved to Japan). Connected to its excellent headphones output are Grado SR80 phones.

Me and the variety of stuff I was lugging to this afternoon's Girl

Scout meeting.

I'm a Daisy Girl Scout leader - those are the kindergarten aged girls

who love pretty much everything but are still often being properly

socialized for group activities, so they're fun, but super tiring!

Junior Girl Scouts get Badges, Brownies get Try Its, and Daisies?

They earn Daisy Petals, of course! They get one petal for each

section of the Girl Scout Law ("Honest and Fair," "Friendly and

Helpful," etc.), so we spend a meeting going over one of those

concepts and some other fun stuff thrown in to boot. The poster

shows each of the petals with the corresponding part of the Law

on it.

The globe was to help us choose our World Thinking Day country to

learn about, but I actually ended up leaving it home until they'd

picked - I figured they'd go by the color of the country on the globe

above anything else. ;-) The CD player was because the girls were

playing "statues" (dance until the music stops, then freeze) as an

opening activity. The purse is because, well, because it holds

everything I need when I leave the house. The big blue container

holds all the files and paperwork for the troop, including newsletters

and the like. And the two towels - one is our "quiet spot" - if a

girl needs some time alone (or Mrs. W tells her she's being

disruptive), she goes to sit on it where she can still see what's

going on until she's ready to return. The other was to play hedgehog

which is a cool little game I learned this week.

And the tired looking redhead in back? She keeps them from running

totally amok and every now and then thinks she gets her point across.

(Oh, and I'm bent over, even I'm not quite *this* short.)

(Oh, also, guess where the camera was for this photo? On the tripod, baby!)

Hmmm... how to portray a decade twenty years ago?? The first thing that came to mind was the fashion; but I don't remember or don't possess anything that screams 90s. So, then music. Aha! As the mom of two girls who were tweenagers then, I was able to scrounge up at least one 'boy band' CD. And how did we play it? The personal portable CD player!

Wow. Times are really different now... 8-)

Philips CD650 vintage CD Player 1986

ADS/Braun atelier stack, including R1 receiver, CD4 CD player & C3 cassette deck.

We spent $10 on the scanner, after verifying that it would work with Windows 7. Carolyn & the girl selling it both raced each other to see who could find verification of this fact on their cell phone first. (Carolyn lost.)

$3.00 for another blacklight, which promptly went up on our wall, controlled by remote X10 controller.

Clint paid $2.00 for the cd player for his car. This hilarious guy was trying to buy his other one for $1 instead of $2. He didn't speak English, and kept just saying "One". The guy selling it was like, "No, two!". The first guy repeated "One" at least 10 times in response. Finally he gave up and parted with it for $1. In the middle of this, he threw up his hands to ignore the "One" guy, and sold Clint his for $2, then went back to dealing with the "One" guy, who started back up again. It was pretty hilarious, especially how he finally did get it for $1. That was the hardest haggle I've seen in 30+ years of yardsaleing.

$2.00 for the Heineken mirror as a gift.

$1.00 total for the extension cords. Apparently, we still need more.

$0.25 was more than Carolyn wanted to spend on the ice tray, but it seemed like it'd be an easy one to use. We're getting to the point where we may have to throw some ice trays out. But we are breeding them into a new race of easy-to-use ice trays. Some are WAY easier than others. Let the war begin!

I am very glad with our new cat, she is really thriving with us. Here she is listening to very special string music, you can hear it here, and discover that comparing violin music with cat miowing is not a depreciation, but a big compliment for both violin and cat:
