A fire caused some evacuations in the neighborhoods on the northern part of Salt Lake City, near Ensign Peak, over the last two days or so. It mainly affected a grassy area so we can expect significant changes in the burn scar in a matter of months, assuming we get sufficient rain. Fortunately, no structured were damaged and no life was lost. By the way, the wait for more significant rains in this region is seeming interminable at this point. Added to that, our snowpack this year was abysmal.
Airglow is caused by various processes in the upper atmosphere of Earth, such as the recombination of atoms which were photoionized by the Sun during the day, luminescence caused by cosmic rays striking the upper atmosphere, and chemiluminescence caused mainly by oxygen and nitrogen reacting with hydroxyl free radicals at heights of a few hundred kilometers.
On this night it was very evident facing away from the core of the Milky Way ... so I composed this capture along the Valley of the Gods Road with the formation off in the distance that can look like a hand touching the sky. Added some light along the road here for some added interest.
I got up early to hike Marcus Landslide Trail and catch a sunrise. But caught this moon set at sunrise by looking behind me at this interesting rock formation.

Get to know this 3.9-mile out-and-back trail near Scottsdale, Arizona. Generally considered a moderately challenging route, it takes an average of 1 h 39 min to complete. This is a very popular area for hiking, mountain biking, and running, so you'll likely encounter other people while exploring. The best times to visit this trail are October through April. Marcus Landslide Trail is an interpretive trail with signs along the way describing the geological forces that led to a landslide about 500,000 years ago. This trail is fairly easy for the most part except for the final loop section which climbs up. There are many boulders and interesting rock formations along the way. The interpretive signs give information about the landslide, how it was believed to be caused, and the resulting landscape. The trail also gives nice views of the surrounding area, including Four Peaks, Mount McDowell, Weaver's Needle. The trail is well-maintained.
The "McDowell Sonoran Preserve" is a joint effort of the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy and the City of Scottsdale to preserve the McDowell Mountains as undeveloped.

The Tiare flower is indigenous to the South Pacific. The plant needs full to partial sunlight and frequent watering to blossom. Overwatering will cause it to wither.
The Tiare flower grows on a bush that can be 20 feet tall during the blooming season which coincides with the islands’ dry season (March to November).

Tent structure cause by horizontal compression on a thin but strong ice sheet. Perhaps 2 or 3 feet high by tens of feet long, More or less parallel to the other structure in the previous photo. Zoom in, the focus is best at the structure.
The beginnings of a hummock structure, but they get much more broken and jumbled on large lakes in the Northern U.S. and Canada.

The first dumping of snow in Southern Ontario this year caused chaos on the roads and rails but this foamer was out playing in the snow.

This effect seemed to be caused by sea spray being force up from small caves under the rocks....there was a lot of smoke in the air from BBQ,s, a South African tradition on the new year.

Taken with a Canon 70D DSLR and Sigma AF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO DG telephoto lens. I love the earthshine phenomenon you see in this photo. It's caused by the light of the sun reflecting off the Earth and onto the face of the moon.
