The discoloration on the wing is caused by a shadow from the buddleia.

The Large Tortoiseshell was once widespread across Britain and most common in the woodlands of central and southern England but while its numbers were always known to fluctuate, it declined to extinction by the 1960s.

This beautiful insect has since suffered a severe decline and there have been less than 150 records since 1951. There was only one butterfly where I took this photograph but apparently just further down the coast at Portland I understand approx. 6 sited at to different sites.

It is still common in some parts of Europe, but declining in others. There continue to be sporadic records in Britain, the majority from the south coast but some are considered to be of specimens released from reared stock rather than genuine immigrants. Butterfly conservation are hoping some will breed.

There have been several suggested causes for its decline - including climate change, parasitism, and the effect of Dutch Elm disease on one of its primary foodplants.

A Green Heron puts a bit of an effort in to finding its next meal.

So actually two bonuses - I was photographing the dead trees along the Creek - then a Green Heron pops in - bonus - then it stretches its neck - 2nd bonus!!

Some of the causes of the death of the trees along this section of the Creek include:

Record-Breaking Droughts: The area has faced prolonged, multi-month droughts that left sections of the creek near the outpost bone-dry for long stretches. This severely starves the cypress root systems of the consistent moisture they require to keep their canopy alive. NOTE - the droughts have been going on most every year not just this year - these trees have been dead for years that I know about.

Violent Water Fluctuations: When rains do return, the water levels bounce erratically. The creek can swing from completely dry to swelling up over seven feet deep within days. This sudden, extreme shift from drought to deep, stagnant flooding suffocates the stressed tree roots.

New Cowbone Marsh Channeling: Changes and new channels cut through the nearby Cowbone Marsh have altered how water drains away from the Palmdale section. This causes the creek's water to drop much faster than it historically did, exposing the trees to rapid hydration shock.

Painted Lady - Vanessa cardui

The Painted Lady is a long-distance migrant, which causes the most spectacular butterfly migrations observed in Britain and Ireland.

Each year, it spreads northwards from the desert fringes of North Africa, the Middle East, and central Asia, recolonising mainland Europe and reaching Britain and Ireland. In some years it is an abundant butterfly, frequenting gardens and other flowery places in late summer.

Painted lady butterflies have a pale buffy-orange background colour to the upper wings. The forewings have black tips marked with white spots; the hindwings have rows of black spots. The undersides are pale with blue eyespots.

Painted ladies do not hibernate in Britain; instead they migrate to and from northern Africa. They can arrive in early spring, but late May and June are more usual. They are fairly common across Britain, numerous in some years.

Females lay their small, green eggs on a range of species, such as nettles and mallows, but thistles are the general favourite. When the caterpillars hatch they begin to eat the underside of the leaf. As they grow, each constructs a tent of folded leaves fastened with silk.

Caterpillars pupate and remain suspended in a large tent of leaves until the adults emerge in August and September. The whole British population dies or emigrates to Africa in the autumn.

Caterpillars are black, speckled with tiny white spots and have a yellow stripe down each side. They are covered in spines.

Here is an image of a dipper taken on the River Irwell. The image was made at a very low shutter speed. The techs are 700mm, ISO100, f10 @1/25th Sec. Although I have in the past achieved just one sharp image at 1/6th sec the chances of getting much lower are considerably reduced because this image is created close to a large weir which causes the ground to vibrate slightly. Slow shutter speed images are best when there is water cascading downward which barely occurs in this image. Nonetheless the slow shutter does change the appearance of the fast flowing water and changes the mood of the image. On this day I was able to make about 3 sharp images of the bird and many images were consigned to the bin. I can spend all day with dippers and never get bored.

Formerly widespread in gallery forest or woodland, now most numerous in the Pantanal. Elsewhere very rare or absent. They are the longest in length of the macaws. Flocks can be as large as 40-50 birds. Many landowners offer protection to these birds helping to stabilize the population.

Of the 145 species of parrot in Central and South America, 45 are in danger of extinction. All 18 species of macaws are threatened. The primary causes are habitat loss and heavy exploitation for the pet trade.

Hyacinth macaws brought $5,000 to $10,000 each in the pet trade as of 1988. This high price fosters a dangerous level of poaching and smuggling. Data and anecdotal evidence suggests that as many as 10,000 Hyacinth macaws were taken from the wild during the 1980s.
