This Shaman is practicing a Mayan ritual in a Catholic chapel. Mayan spirituality in Guatemala is still very much a presence, particularly in the highlands, along with Catholicism and the more recent incursions of Evangelical Christianity.

The Basilica of St Dominic, also known as the Basilica of Our Lady of Safe Haven and St Dominic

The oldest church in the central square of the city, was built between 1721 - 1741, belongs to the Roman Catholic cult and bears the dedication of Saint Ladislaus. The tower was erected in 1800. In this place is the oldest church altar in the city, dating from 1730.

The painting of the altar depicts St. Ladislaus holding a key to the bishop of Oradea.

The frescoes on the vault, painted in 1908 by Turz Gyula, present different aspects of the life of the sanctified king: how he makes spring water from the rock, or builds a church in Oradea.

The Basilica and National Shrine of Mary, Help of Christians at the Holy Hill

I composed this photograph while visiting St. Bavo's Cathedral, in Ghent, Belgium.

St Bavo’s Cathedral is the oldest parish church in the lively heart of Ghent. It stands on the site of a 10th century church and a 12th century Romanesque church. The latter was dedicated to St John the Baptist. In the Middle Ages, Ghent was a rich and powerful city-state that had the means to commission ever-larger and more opulent churches. So the Church of St John the Baptist was converted during the 15th and 16th centuries into the imposing Gothic St Bavo’s Cathedral.

Like the Zen experience, “the heart of Catholicism, too, is a living experience of unity in Christ which far transcends conceptual formulations.” ...

...He saw that the religious experience could not be programmed, promoted, or discovered, and that it was ultimately ineffable. Thus, sharing different interpretations of religious experience with contemplatives of other religions could be helpful for enriching the spiritualities of both religions...

He stated, “My experiences . . . are more and more woven into the great pattern of the whole experience of man and even something quite beyond all experience.”

If you visit the picturesque town of Sintra, just north of Lisbon in Portugal, there you’ll find a very deep hole. Not just any hole, mind you, but a surreal well-like hole which is in fact an initiation well created by the Knights of Templar, a Catholic military institution.

It’s to be found within the rambling gardens of Quinta da Regaleira, an extravagant gothic manor which is part of Sintra's extraordinary Unesco World Heritage landscape. It’s one of two initiation wells which spiral deep down into the ground, almost like inverted towers.

No-one knows for sure, but it’s believed that Templar candidates were blindfolded and taken via flights of steps to the bottom; then they’d be left to find their way up towards the light. If they managed the feat, they’d be welcomed into the brotherhood. And if they failed… well, who knows?

Today, visitors can make their own way down and up quite safely, without fear of blindfolds or initiation.

Milan Cathedral, Duomo di Milano in Italian, or Metropolitan Cathedral-Basilica of the Nativity of Saint Mary (Italian: Basilica cattedrale metropolitana di Santa Maria Nascente), is the cathedral church of Milan, Lombardy, Italy. Dedicated to the Nativity of St. Mary (Santa Maria Nascente), it is the seat of the Archbishop of Milan. The cathedral took nearly six centuries to complete: construction began in 1386, and the final details were completed in 1965. Cologne Cathedral (German: Kölner Dom, pronounced [ˌkœlnɐ ˈdoːm] ⓘ, officially Hohe Domkirche Sankt Petrus, English: Cathedral Church of Saint Peter) is a cathedral in Cologne, North Rhine-Westphalia belonging to the Catholic Church. It is the seat of the Archbishop of Cologne and of the administration of the Archdiocese of Cologne. It is a renowned monument of German Catholicism and Gothic architecture and was declared a World Heritage Site in 1996.[4][5] It is Germany's most visited landmark, attracting an average of 6 million people a year.[6] At 157 m (515 ft), the cathedral is the tallest twin-spired church in the world, the second tallest church in Europe after Ulm Minster, and the third tallest church of any kind in the world.[7]

Construction of Cologne Cathedral began in 1248 but was halted in the years around 1560,[8] unfinished. Attempts to complete the construction began around 1814 but the project was not properly funded until the 1840s. The edifice was completed to its original medieval plan in 1880.[9] The towers for its two huge spires give the cathedral the largest façade of any church in the world.

Cologne's medieval builders had planned a grand structure to house the reliquary of the Three Kings and fit for its role as a place of worship for the Holy Roman Emperor. Despite having been left incomplete during the medieval period, Cologne Cathedral eventually became unified as "a masterpiece of exceptional intrinsic value" and "a powerful testimony to the strength and persistence of Christian belief in medieval and modern Europe".[5] In Cologne, only the telecommunications tower is higher than the cathedral.[4]
