Description: Footage of Vatican City, a city-state governed by the Holy See. It is the administrative headquarters of the Catholic church, and is an area of 49 hectares surrounded by the city of Rome.
Vatican City gained independence from Italy in 1929.
When this footage was recorded, Pope Francis was the sovereign of Vatican City and head of the Catholic church. Following his death on Easter Monday, 2025 at the age of 88, a new pope will be chosen through a voting process by a college of Cardinals.
2025 is a jubilee year for the Catholic Church. This is a year of pardon of sins and debts, celebrated every 25 or 50 years. More than 30 million pilgrims are expected to visit the Vatican during this jubilee year, according to an article in Euronews. The celebration began on 24th December (Christmas Eve) 2024 and will continue until 6 January (Epiphany) 2026.
This is an ossuary under a church on Via de Veneto. It contains the bones of over 4000 Capuchin friars, collected between the years of 1500 and 1900.
The bones were separated, sorted and then formed into shapes. Even the ceilings and light fixtures are made of human bones.

My uncle and aunt. With 12 kids, they never had a lot of money, but they sure raised their kids right. Both of them are eloquent and passionate practitioners of the Catholic faith.

Boutries (a.k.a. The Cheese a.k.a. Cheesus) gave me, Jason, and some Hattiesfriends a back-of-the-house tour of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception where we found this room.
Jason took this, he's a better photographer than I am.
"Por aquí se avisa para que se administren los Santos Sacramentos a desora de la noche".
"Here notice is given that the Holy Sacraments are to be administered at late hours of the night".
Catholicism at least for me doesn't bring to mind a naked man kissing a cross. Sculpture in the cathedral courtyard.
