Today, An intense electrical storm passed over the Inland Empire. It was a storm of epic proportions, consisting of 3 different fronts. One front was located over Mt. San Jacinto to the southeast and another over Wrightwood to the North and a 3rd over San Bernardino due East.
At work I watched as this system was approaching on the World Radar app on my phone and was hoping to get off work early. But a couple of last minute DVD packages came In and I had to stay till midnight to finish up the color corrections. When I left work and headed east down the freeway towards home the sky was lighting up from everywhere it seemed, and I could see it was way off in the distance at about 40 miles away. I happen to live way off in the distance about 40 miles away, which was convenient, I would be driving right into the storms. I have never had the opportunity to shoot lightning with a tripod before, so I raced home and as I drove I witnessed an amazing and rare occasion. I managed to catchup to the storm during my mad dash home when I got home at around 1:00am I grabbed my camera gear and headed out to a location near-by so that I could get a clear view of the valley. It was challenging trying to shoot 3 storms at once, I was running from one composition to the next, trying to get my timing right. At about 3-5 secs between lightning and thunder means these storms are all close-by. Thunder travels a mile in 5 seconds, so I was right in the thick of it (3-5 miles is a general safety zone) and I was having reservations about shooting at this location because it is relatively flat with nothing for at least a half mile in any direction, I was feeling really exposed out there, but I was determined to get a couple photos of some lightning. This shot was taken from a full size tripod that I setup inside my car. (What a chicken I am) Hehe :)
After it stopped raining, I ventured away from the car a few hundred feet and shot there for an hour or so, all the while keeping myself lower than my camera ( I didn't want to get my ankle caps blown off ). At around 3:00 a.m. a policeman pulled up and put his spotlight on my car. I flashed him with my flashlight a couple of times to let him know it was my car. He twisted the spotlight over toward me and saw I was taking photographs. He immediately turned off the spotlight and the headlights on his car. Apparently he knew something about photography and walked over to ask me a few questions and then ask if he ruined my shot. Cool !!. When we were done chatting he walked off, then turned back and said by the way your in a "No Parking Zone." When I arrived here it was pouring down rain and indeed, there was a sign that said "No Stopping Anytime" not 10 ft from my car.

We took a spin over to Wilton to take a few shots of the great windmill there. I took loads of closer shots of the mill but I quite liked the wider view of the light on the Oil Seed Rape which seems to be turning already. I am afraid I am in catchup mode again after spending some time in N Devon!

I apologise for my absence. I've been working on a couple of contract jobs, and been up to the Gold Coast in Queensland to visit my sister.
Not having a regular full-time job has changed my routine and headspace, such that I haven't been able to settled into a routine of shooting and posting.

I'm back!!
Hope you have all been well, I decided to have a complete break from social media and felt the better of it, although I know I have a mountain of wonderful images to catch up on and I did miss you all! But before I wade into catchup mode, I wanted to share with you a delicious slice from Cheddar Gorge. Aside from the amazing geology, the tree-man in me couldn't help focusing on my lofty chums in this amazing terrain. A stiched pano was called for as the slope was immense and although I loved the singular tree in the centre, the surrounding terrain had to be included. Expect more from this stunning location.

The background here was a "captured mistake" i.e. I was moving the tripod around when shooting some autumnal images the other year and it was still actually taking shots. This resulted in the abstract streaks.

The process of following the RCP Inspection trip from the Twin Cities to Kansas City proved to be an exercise in flexibility for Puda and I as delays made plans change on a hourly basis. The original plan was for the train to make Kansas City by Sunday Night but due to delays the train made it by mid morning allowing us a few hours of daylight to catch the train. The train however went through our resting place in the middle of the night (Ottumwa, Iowa) so we had to play catchup. Thanks to a timely message from Luke Renish we figured we could beat the train to the northern part of KC. Birmingham Junction looked like a decent spot to try so we met everyone there with a half hour to spare. Two angles including this one at the junction here just south of the junction were captured in succession making the morning drive worthwhile.

Does anyone else start planning their next holiday the day they get back from the previous one? Me too.
The Pinnacles are limestone formations within Nambung National Park, near the town of Cervantes, Western Australia. The area contains thousands of weathered limestone pillars. Some of the tallest pinnacles reach heights of up to 3.5 m above the yellow sand base.. Amazing to think the raw material for the limestone of the Pinnacles came from seashells in an earlier era that was rich in marine life. The local Aboriginal community believes that the Pinnacles are fossilized ghosts, how cool is that! I want to visit again at nighttime, that would be magical. Being part of a dark sky reserve and so remote, it has some of the darkest skies in Australia. The nighttime vista must look incredibly alien & amazing.
