This one we found at Yellowstone, probably just coming out of hibernation. It was close to twice as big as the marmots we've seen (and even had claw their way up our kids when they were kids) in WA and western Canada. Males weigh between 6 and 11 pounds. The ones in Yosemite are the 6-pounders; Yellowstone, 11. I think they may be the largest of all squirrels, certainly the largest of the ground squirrels.

On a personal note, thanks to all of you who have been concerned about my health. All is well except for a case of drop-foot (just as I was about to really get going again), and walking is limited to about a mile. I haven't held a camera in 6 months, but I think that's why my neck and shoulders no longer hurt! REALLY hurt.
Again, thank you. I hope to join the photography world again in time for bluebird nesting. We're supposed to get rain, but the forecasters are only 80% accurate 10% of the time. But I'm looking at being in my new shape (lost 30 pounds but my pants still fit: why is that?) by February.
First post after a short break, so I thought I'd share something special. This is such a gorgeous daguerreotype, but the really exciting bit is what was found behind the image. As will be seen in the comments below, there was a tiny pressed rose, a lock of hair, and two poems. The debate (and research) is still ongoing as to whether they are death poems, and who Rosa might be; indeed whether she is even the girl in the photograph.
American quarter-plate daguerreotype in a bijou case.
Estimated date ca 1850 based on the image frame and overall feel, but needs an expert eye on the clothing I think.

I get a decent number of questions asking me what I shoot with, do I use X or Y or whatever... so to make it easier I recently just took a photo of what's in my camera case, and then dumped it out so folks could get an idea of what tools I use (admittedly some more than other's).
This is what I keep my camera gear in... if you want to see the contents dumped out see this photo where it's easier to see everything as in this photo there is a lot of stuff that is buried under something else.

Tech Details: If your curious how one takes a photograph of all of one's photo gear the answer is you borrow a friends camera from down the street (a Rebel XT/350D with a Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L lens).
Lighting provided by one White Lighting X1600 to camera right difused through a large softbox, with Westcott 42" Silver reflector to camera right to just bring in some fill light. A short roll of White Savage Seamless just hanging off the knuckle arm of an Avenger C-Stand (easier and quicker than getting out a big background stand). Triggered by a good ole-fashioned sync cable connected to a Nikon AS-15 on the hot shoe since the RebelXT/350D lacks a PC Sync connector.
It's fun to go back and look over some old photos once in awhile...this was the Nickel Plate on the move to the Quad Cities for Train Fest in 2011. On July 20, it ventured north out of Peoria on the Iowa Interstate, passing the Case dealership at Henry, IL.
I bought this film case about 20 years ago from Spiratone, a camera accessory store in Flushing, NY that went out of business many years ago. It can hold 4 rolls of 35mm film. It's waterproof and supposed to be x-ray proof too but I cannot confirm that. Since then I haven't seen it other stores. I had seen other film cases but not this one.
Just a documentation photo here to show the contents of my Everest hard case. I picked up two of these and this is the case that holds my landscape/prime gear.
After a few close calls at the ocean in the past, I will no longer fear the wrath of Poseidon. I can conceivably jam my gear between a couple of rocks on the beach and shoot through high tide...later, when the seas have retreated, I will dig my case out of the sand, change lenses, and shoot some night images.
Okay, so now i've run out of ideas...
In case you were wondering why i'm all alone: the Mad Hatter and the March Hare are on holiday, the White Rabbit was busy, his watch business really took off, you know. The Queen of Hearts was at a croquet match, and her team was winning.
The Cheshire Cat was there but he kept dissapearing.
I tried contacting Alice but she didn't write back. I think she's still on a voyage with the Mock Turtle. (anyone who wants Alice's address, do let me know)
And of course, Mssrs Dum and Dee are still in The Looking Glass.
