Chrysomelidae

While photographing our little Maratus spiders with Kate, a friend, yesterday, she said "Something is moving here on the ground." and photographed it.

We had a show and tell later and Kate had photographed these Case beetle larvae. Nice find Kate!! :-)

I went back looking for it today but couldn't see it.

Photo: Kate Brown Thanks for the use of your photos. :-)

Somewhereville PI, Eddie" the Razor" Doyle leaving the wharf after solving the case of "the left handed chop sticks." He found the chop sticks in a tired rusty Shanghai freighter filled with cargo containers large enough to hide a thousand sins. Now it was time for a visit to his second office, a wharf side bar where the bartender knew Eddie's order better than his name. Bourbon was his faithful confidant, his silent partner on those cases that took him down darker roads than he’d ever cared to walk.

Penny stood at the edge of the grand staircase and closed her eyes.

She could feel the ghosts passing through her, lifting her hair... she could hear their whispering chatter circling around her but couldn't quite make out the words.

She dare not take a deep breath in case she breathed in another's soul by mistake <3

Liz and Leen ask how I spot these bugs. When I go for a photowalk in my nearby city park I first look for opportunities for a grand landscape with wonderful clouds and some kind of good foreground. If that's not happening, I look for wildlife. If that's not happening then I put a PK-13 extension tube on my trusty old 80-200 zoom lens and switch to looking for macro shots of wildflowers, bugs and other small things. The best place to find bugs is in flowers, so I look at the flowers along the trail to see what's there. It turns out lots of bugs are only out for a short period of time, so you have to catch them in season. Since I go for a photowalk from spring through fall, I give myself a chance to spot a lot of different kinds of bugs. Most likely there are hundreds of kinds of macro critters in Chisholm Creek Park that I haven't photographed yet.

The reason there is limited EXIF data when I use the extension tube is that I have to set the f-stop, exposure and focus manually. Old technology, I know, but it works for me....

Well, another Monochrome Monday has rolled around. To celebrate, here is an image of Terrace Creek Falls located in the Short Hills Provincial Park just West of St Catharines, Ontario. I have photographed this waterfall several times but in each case the flow has been no more than a trickle. Rain over the preceding several days had increased water flow in other streams nearer home (in Grimsby, Ontario) so I assumed it might be worth a hike into Terrace Creek to see if it too had benefited from the rains. And it had. First time in five years of trying to get a decent water flow shot. That said, the sun was harsh in the time slot I had available, so I took the image with the intention of a B&W end result. Colour is bland for this image. A nice Spring day on the Niagara Escarpment. - JW

Taken using a tripod-mounted Nikon D7100 fitted with a Nikkor 12-24mm lense with a 10-stop Neutral Density/GND filter, ISO100, Auto WB, Manual mode, f/8.0, 25 sec. PP in free Open Source RAWTherapee from Nikon RAW/NEF source file: scale image to 9000x6000, enable Graduated Neutral Density tool and then rotate and shift it to darken the bright sunlit area in the diagonal lower right part of the frame, enable the Tone Mapping tool and use it to get a better balance between the dark wall of the rock wall forming the falls area and the rest of the image, boost contrast and Chromaticity in L-A-B mode, boost vibrance, sharpen, save. Note: result is a bit flat in colour but good for B&W conversion in the next stage. PP in free Open Source GIMP: convert image to B&W using the film simulation tool with the Ilford Delta 100 model, duplicate to create three layers each with black/transparent layer mask and, using a large, soft-edged brush, paint white on each one so you wind up with one layer masked for the sky area, one for the rock wall that forms the falls and one for the brightly lit foreground area, adjust each layer using the tone curve tool to get a good looking representation for each of the three areas, create new working layer from visible result, sharpen, save, scale image to 6000x4000, sharpen slightly, add fine black-and-white frame, add bar and text on left, save, scale image to 1800 wide for posting, sharpen slightly, save.

A slightly different comp then my first post from this spot and my trip... I know there is blown highlights on the sun and nearby clouds but in this case I think it conveys the scene well...the lens flares maybe not so much :-)

I get a decent number of questions asking me what I shoot with, do I use X or Y or whatever... so to make it easier I recently just took a photo of what's in my camera case, and then dumped it out so folks could get an idea of what tools I use (admittedly some more than other's).

If you dump out my camera case... this is what falls out. Too see what it looks like packed inside see this photo.

Tech Details: If your curious how one takes a photograph of all of one's photo gear the answer is you borrow a friends camera from down the street (a Rebel XT/350D with a Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L lens).

Lighting provided by one White Lighting X1600 to camera right difused through a large softbox, with Westcott 42" Silver reflector to camera right to just bring in some fill light. A short roll of White Savage Seamless just hanging off the knuckle arm of an Avenger C-Stand (easier and quicker than getting out a big background stand). Triggered by a good ole-fashioned sync cable connected to a Nikon AS-15 on the hot shoe since the RebelXT/350D lacks a PC Sync connector.
