Just playing with an ND filter.

Crawfordsburn waterfall near Belfast. I like the way my eye follows the flow of the water on its path through the rocks. I shot this handheld with a Cpl filter and edited in dxo, mainly darkening the edges and removing a few distracting leaves.

Seven year old C44-9W BNSF 5079 pokes out of the west portal of Cascade Tunnel at MP 1708.1 on BNSF's Scenic Sub on the point of train M-SPOEVE-7 (Spokane to Everett manifest).

Passing beneath the Cascade Range, the 7.8 mile long bore is the longest railroad tunnel in the United States. Opened in 1929 by BNSF predecessor Great Northern Railway it replaced a 2.6 mile long tunnel 500 feet higher that dated from 1900 which itself had replaced the original temporary switchback alignment over the mountain dating to the GN's 1893 construction to the Pacific Coast.

One particular interesting fact among many is that this monumental tunnel took only three years to construct, and the project was led by Frederick Mears. Colonel Mears is best known for being appointed to the Alaska Engineering Commission by President Wilson and then serving as the chief engineer responsible for the construction of that road. Col. Mears saw that railroad to completion and resigned on July 7, 1923 six days before President Harding drove the gold spike in Nenana, AK at the end of the bridge bearing Mears' name across the mighty Tanana River.

This tunnel sits at an elevation of 2881 ft some 1180 ft below the pass that the original switchback route crossed. The east portal is in the community of Berne in Snohomish County, WA while the west seen here is in a location aptly named Scenic.

Some were green, some were bright, some were spent in Cascade Creek north of Durango, CO

This was sitting outside my Mother-in-Law’s garage somewhat neglected but I was captivated by its charm.

Last night, I took my son to a local place - Bass Creek - for an after dinner stroll. I've been to this creek many times as it is close to where I live, but I have never been there at the right time of day with the right equipment for a photograph of the creek itself. This time, I was intentional about setting myself up to get a picture. Here is just one of many cascades on one of dozens of creeks in Montana's Bitterroot Valley.

Low water reveals an interesting curved path that the creek has carved into the creek bed

I posted a photo of this little cascade on December 3rd, and it is time to post another one. The reflected trees seemed to wrap around the top of the cascade as the water started to drop over the rocks. All of these photos were perfect for black and white because of the distortion and the dull blue sky color in the original images.

This is a single image of a beautiful Sunrise at Cascade Pond. On that particular morning you could take pictures all around. This is the first light kissing Cascade Mountain.

Have a blessed Sunday!

A cascade of foliage (weeping willow trees) fronting the river aspect of the old St.James mill at Whitefriar’s Bridge Norwich.

Inaugurated in 1840 by the Norwich Yarn Company, which was wound up within ten years, St James continued as a textile mill under new owners. Some of the floors were let out for weaving, making men’s braces and manufacturing pianofortes. At that time Jarrold was looking for additional space for its expanding printing business. John Jarrold II established a business in Norwich as booksellers, stationers and printers, but by 1900 London Street was full to overflowing with about 400 people working in the printing works and the shop. The Whitefriars site was bought by Jarrold in 1903 to provide space for their printing business, and the old weaving sheds were converted for printing.

Cascade State Park - North Shore

Hiking the river trail on this foggy morning. The flow rate was incredible, loud and exciting. In one or two deep crevices, there was still solid winter ice!

It's one of my favorite trails to hike, and have seen more than one bear over the years. Nope, nothing lately however . . only deer and "sassy" chipmunks! :)
