I've been doing a lot of design work recently, but the actual amount of time I spend designing stuff is about half what I spend keeping up correspondence with clients and potential clients. I'd like to spend more time actually designing and experimenting, but I've found that having someone looking over my shoulder in one way or another makes me quite a bit more conscious of how I work and what I design. That's good in that I'm learning more about what I can and can't do in terms of my pure ability and style, but sometimes I also wonder if doing design work under the pressure of a client's expectations takes some of my playfulness out of my work, or my ability to create innovative designs.
