"BRAN" 4198 was ex C&NW 4198, exx Rock Island 1268, built in 1952, and acquired by the BRAN from C&NW around 1995. In the background is BRAN 427, ex IHB NW2 8815. The Brandon Railroad serves the GB&W carshop located on former South Omaha Terminal Railway trackage in the Omaha Stockyards District.

When I first visited the B&O Museum in Baltimore in 1993, some of their most famous exhibits were still outside- not good for long-term preservation, but certainly good for photos. The restoration of the carshop building adjacent to the iconic roundhouse, together with a program to slim down the size of the collection, allowed pieces like these to move to indoor display locations.

Four SFG RS18u's sit dead and drained at CN's Campbellton Yard on 3/15/2025.

Behind the chip cars is the CN carshop, where SFG rents space to conduct locomotive servicing and repairs. With the GP38-2's on the property, the bulk of the MLW fleet was placed into storage at the end of 2024.

With the eventual expansion to Port-Daniel (now pushed off until this fall), as well as with the new rock shuttle business between Nouvelle and Maria, hopefully the rest of the units will return in the near future.

An NS local heads west (going away from the camera) by Motor Yard in Macedonia. The yard was idled in November 2018. This train worked industries in Macedonia and Twinsburg, which were previously served by yard crews at Motor. Today, NS serves these customers from Rockport Yard on the west side of Cleveland, where this train is returning to. The car shop in the background was closed in 2019.

Having long outlived their usefulness, the former Lehigh Valley Easton car shops stand in extreme disrepair in this 1979 view. I don’t think that the 1882 structure survived to see its centennial.

This is the famed B&O EA No. 51, built by EMC in 1937. Description from the Museum's website:

The Baltimore & Ohio Railroad (B&O) was one of the first railroads in the country to adopt diesel-electric locomotives for its passenger trains in the 1930s. Arriving in 1937. the No. 51 EA was the B&O's first streamlined locomotive. Custom painted for the B&O in blue and grey, the EA unit had an elevated cab and sloping "bulldog" nose. The new design provided collision protection for the crew, was popular among travelers, and set a stylistic precedent for future GM-EMC (later GM-EMD) locomotives. The No. 51 was one of six two-unit sets that were placed in service on the "Capitol Limited" and other premier trains. These new hardworking locomotives were capable of burning fuel more efficiently than steam engines and required less maintenance. The B&O was so pleased with the performance of the No. 51 and its sisters that they decided to order 12 additional models from GM-EMD. One of the No. 51's fellow locomotives was so successful that it operated an entire year on the "Capitol Limited" Washington to Chicago run without missing a trip.

In 1953, the No. 51 was sent back to General Motors as part of a trade-in program. At the plant, the No. 51 was stripped of its usable machinery and sent to the newly opened Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Transportation Museum.

CSX south end yard view to the north end of the yard at Erwin, Tennessee, 4-7-2007. In this scene you may observe both loaded southbound and empty northbound unit coal trains that are spotted in various locations throughout the yard. In the background to the left is an old brick Clinchfield Railroad shop facility building, and in the center background you may observe the CSX car shops building. As you may see, this yard drops down to a lower level and expands out to numerous tracks seen on the left side of the photo. This former Clinchfield Railroad yard and shop facility is now closed and out of service due mostly to the downturn in the coal business.

The summer tourist season is in full swing and the Grand Canyon Railway is running 2 trains per day to the Grand Canyon National Park. The 10:30 departure has the 237 and 4128, ex-Amtrak and ex-NJ Transit respectively, coasting through the yard limits and past the former Santa Fe car shops that they still use for servicing the cars for the trains. The 12 car train has dome-lounge cars Coconino and Grand View, the full-length dome Fred Harvey, and the Max Biegert open platform obs car on the rear.

Here's a great aerial photograph of the shops area at New York Central's Mt. Carmel, Illinois shops in 1951. Lots of good stuff to see including 7 steam engines (4 in the roundhouse), a water tank, the new turntable, a freight house, car shop, roundhouse, etc. I don't know where I got this photo from, but it looks like something from Rex Settlemoir's collection, who's family came from a long line of NYC employees. At this point, steam, the Egyptian and most of the double-track on this line were coming to an end unfortunately.

In this view we have the locomotive servicing area and carshop visible, with a portion of the 30's Yard (formerly the "North Yard") at lower left. We yarded L510 this morning on 38 Track, it is visible at lower right with the two SD40-2W's.
