This photo was taken at the Nanshan Park Zoo in Yantai City (P.R. China). This Chimpanzee was staring out through the glass..

No experiments today. A classic animal on black portrait. I tried adding a nifty border. What do you think about it?

What is most striking to me about this image is the sad look of this animal. One of the few animal shots I have taken so far in which the animal actually looks really sad. It's tempting to interpret his look as a look of sadness about living in captivity. It's not the least probable interpretation because tigers have a huge territory to roam in the wild. In zoos, however, their compounds are typically quite small.

Enjoy the photo!

Both these shots were taken at the British Wildlife Centre a while ago now. I am a bit happier with them since putting them into Light room and Photoshop!

I took this picture in The Netherlands. This mask is actually a huge and amazing sculpture near the seaside. The overall aspect was kind of messy, I enhanced it to make everything smoother and I repainted several parts in the face, the sky and the grass

There Are Obsessions

A poem by Peter S. Quinn

There are obsessions for every ride

Loneliness out there to stay

Shadows of night they sometimes hide

Into the morning and the day

Feelings of sickness everywhere go

Letting you down from the start

Something that only you know

Breaking and piercing your heart

Blossoms of cold in each fight

Nothing will give there any dream

Only the dark in the hour’s fright

With each their uncertainty beam

Oceans and waves that everything lacks

Believing nothing from its cast

Huge spaces of emptiness and blacks

All with their time to low and adjust

We are there standing in our wishing

Anywhere going for even some more

Part of us knowing some dreams missing

Nobody is forever of anything sure

Adapting footsteps through the streets

Of nobody's ways in a cruel world

Each of our emotion opposition meets

Scattering thoughts - dreams unfurled

In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah came Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon unto Jerusalem, and besieged it. And the Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, with part of the vessels of the house of God: which he carried into the land of Shinar to the house of his god; and he brought the vessels into the treasure house of his god. And the king spake unto Ashpenaz the master of his eunuchs, that he should bring certain of the children of Israel, and of the king's seed, and of the princes; Children in whom was no blemish, but well favoured, and skilful in all wisdom, and cunning in knowledge, and understanding science, and such as had ability in them to stand in the king's palace, and whom they might teach the learning and the tongue of the Chaldeans.

CAPTIVITY KILLS !!!

Society and People say they Love animals yet everyday they exploit them, use them, steal them from there natural habitats and wild for human greed.

For six months of each year – day in and day out, from September until March – entire pods of dolphins and small whales are driven into Taiji’s killing cove. Once netted into the cove, the dolphins and whales face brutal slaughter or a lifetime in captivity.

Neither is it cultural to kidnap dolphins from the ocean and sell them to marine parks in order to exploit them until their death for money. This is simply a multimillion-dollar business that fills the pockets of a few at the expense of the suffering and death of many. Here the dolphin trainers and murderers work side-by-side, dolphins trying to escape from the boats that were leading them to death, and precious lives stolen as their bodies are dragged to the butcher house under the tarps of shame. The murderers and trainers tried to hoist them on to the boat to take them to the pens at the harbour where they will be sold to any marine park for large sums of money. What it's happening in Taiji is a global problem. This issue concerns us all.

The dolphins need us, and to help them we must all make a commitment. Tell our friends and families what it's happening, encourage them not to visit dolphinariums or other centers with captive cetaceans. This industry has the same blood stained hands as the dolphin murderers in Taiji. Take to the street -- go to your nearest dolphinarium and explain to the people what is happening there and the history of terror that a dolphin has had to experience to finally end up locked away in a pool for the rest of his life.

Please, never buy a ticket to a Marine Park or facility that holds captive dolphins. Teach your friends, family and children to respect our world's oceans and the magnificent creatures that swim free within.”

This white Bengal Tiger is handsome, but not looking too pleased at the moment. Not quite as it seems, though - he (she?) and a friend are confined to a smallish cage/run while the Panaewa Rainforest Zoo in Hawaii finishes construction of their new large enclosure.

A mahout (elephant carer) finishes an afternoon bath for his boy Robi. Many elephants across Sumatra live in captivity due to the massive habitat destruction.

Spiny skink, Tribolonotus novaeguineae (Schlegel, 1834). Captivity.

In captivity, females of Parson's chameleon lay up to 50 eggs per clutch; the eggs can take up to two years to hatch. In one instance, a healthy juvenile hatched after 781 days.

Expressions #3

The poor boy has had enough in the pen and wants to come out and sit by the fire.

"...where?...who?..."

"Ah, jeez. You're up already? I figured I had another hour."

"Who are you? Why...wait, why am I tied up?"

"Before anything, I'd like to apologize. Involving kids in my work isn't my taste. Anyway, call me Slade, kiddo. You're tied up because I don't want you going anywhere."

"Yeah, but really? I can get out of here pretty easily, y'know!"

"Trust me, I do. I also know that you could probably drop this entire building on me if you wanted to."

"Well I---wait, you know I have powers?"

"Robin and Spoiler have a third member in their party. A metahuman with child-like proportions. Tim Drake and Stephanie Brown currently care for a young orphan named Jackson Ludwig. I'm not stupid, kiddo. I can put a square block in a square hole."

"Hold on, you know who Tim and Steph are? But how?"

"Tim is an associate of Dick Grayson, a previous Robin who's identity I found out. Wasn't hard for me to go down the line once I had him figured out."

"Okay...but why do you want me? I can't do anything for you!"

"Actually, you can do something for me. You're bait. To lure your big brother and Sister here. If they can just find the hinter I left them, we're golden."

"W-what do you want with them?"

"They're my targets. I'm an Assassin. And they're worth alot of money."

"Wait, an assassin named Slade?...Tim told me about you! You're that Deathstroke guy!"

"Huh, smarter than you look."

"Why? Why would you kill Tim and Steph?! They're good people!"

"They ticked off the wrong people. People who's money is green. I'm just doing what I'm hired to do."

"You kill people just for money? That's horrible!"

"Oh, don't feed me that. Compared to alot of the people I've taken out before, I'm a saint. It's a dark world, kiddo. Some of us gotta do what we gotta do."

"Tim's told me alot about you. You have all this skill this and is what you do?"

"You say that like it's a bad thing."

"It is! I can't let you do this to Tim and Steph! I'll stop you!"

"Not likely. I know those bindings won't hold you long, so I have something else. I'd like to apologize in advance again, kiddo. Seeing this is probably gonna open some old wounds. Sure it's not gonna be comfortable for you either, but it's for both of our safety."

"...I need an adult?"

"I am an adult."

"Wait, that's--"

"STAR Labs diluter helm. Used on Metahumans with psychic abilities to mellow them down and dilute their powers. I know you're familiar with this thing. Sorry you have to see it again."

"Get that thing away from me!!"

"Believe me kiddo, I take no pride in doing this..."

I can't always avoid including signs of captivity in a zoo shot, but, I can somehow try to incorporate them into a photo for a certain look.

Jose Tense Ruis (b. 1958) . Kikong Baterya is the nickname of a dummy used by colonial merchants to promote herbal goods in Manila's Ouiapo district. Here Ruiz presents Kikong Baterya as a ventriloquist's dummy, symbolising the local adherence to the colonial power structures.
