Before he died, country music legend Gram Parsons decided to be cremated at Cap Rock in Joshua Tree National Monument (a tall order that the NPS would have been loath to agree to). After his death, Gram Parsons became part of Rock and Roll legend. Perhaps due to an inheritance dispute, his father elected to have Gram buried in Louisiana in a private ceremony without any of his music buddies. However as it was about to be shipped East, Gram Parsons' body disappeared from Los Angeles International Airport.
Two friends decided to honor Gram Parson's wishes, and stole his body, driving it on a borrowed hearse back to Joshua Tree. There at night, they doused Parsons' body in gasoline and set it on fire (as a note, this is not the proper way to cremate). A giant fireball erupted, police gave chase, but as they were "were encumbered by sobriety", the friends escaped. They were later arrested, only to have everyone uncover that there was no crime in the State of California for stealing a body; the friends were fined $750 for stealing the coffin. Parsons' now-charred remains were then finally shipped to and buried in Louisiana.
Cap Rock, known for its interesting shape, is another site of pilgrimage for Gram Parsons fans, and a source of much headache for the NPS, who have to deal with frequent graffiti. A small monument placed by a fan, "Safe at Home" was recently moved by the Park Service to Joshua Tree Inn, and there is no mention of this in park literature.
