Vishay’s new 500 PGP-ST series of screw-terminal power aluminum capacitors offers efficient, high capacitance/voltage combinations to 15,000 µF at 400 V in nine case sizes ranging from 50 mm by 80 mm to 90 mm by 220 mm. A cheap chinese DMM monitoring a telephone line (PABX extension, connected to the 700 series red telephone. The first part shows a call being made, connected (the line voltage sits at around +6.5V as the loop current drags it down). and then cleared (there is a big transient at the end). Then there is an incoming PABX call (the polarity reversal at the start is just before CLID and ringing voltage which is seen as a big overload by this cheap meter although it is a reasonable 25 Hz sinewave).

 

I even managed (accidentally) to send a recall signal after the phone rang by "flashing" the hookswitch which is why the line polarity also reverses at +48V (the phone also gives a short ring to remind you that the caller has been placed on hold, but as the DMM only samples every second it does not pick ths up.

 

It was a real pain to get the RS232 working as the link is fussy about having sufficient voltage on the RS232 port (it did not work at all with another old PC that actually had a proper RS232 port, even though the same PC works fine controlling my radio scanner) but I had a USB to RS232 adapter to hand which does the job.

 

This certainly won't compete with kit from Agilent or Hameg but for less than £20 its still quite impressive (it does temperature, capacitance and frequency as well..)

INTRODUCTION

Vishay VSMP2018 ultra high precision Bulk Metal® Z-Foil

resistor is the result of a new concept in resistors

manufacturing: A proprietary Bulk Metal Foil of known and

controllable properties is applied to a special ceramic

substrate. A resistive pattern is then photoetched by an

ultra-fine technique developed by Vishay.

This process results in a resistor element that combines the

all important characteristics of low temperature coefficient

(TCR), long-term stability, ESD immunity, tight tolerance,

non-inductance, low capacitance and low noise.

These characteristics are optimum, approaching in total

performance the theoretical ideal, a straight wire.

The behavior of Vishay resistors under load is characterized

by a very small initial resistance change which occurs within

the first 500 h of the test. Only insignificant resistance

changes are observed upon continuation of the test, and no

signs of wear out appear even at full load over several

thousands hours.

The VSMP has a full wraparound termination which ensures

safe handling during the manufacturing process, as well as

providing stability during multiple thermal cyclings.

This 3D stereographic photo is of the CardioMEMS device, an implantable pressure sensor that wirelessly measures pulmonary artery pressures without requiring any batteries. It is used for heart failure patients to monitor their hemodynamics and estimate their volume status. This aids in prophylactically adjusting diuretics and heart failure medications before a patient becomes symptomatic and has to present to a hospital for a heart failure exacerbation. Reducing hospitalizations and HF exacerbations would aim to reduce mortality and improve quality of life.

 

The device is pretty amazing as it is very small and works indefinitely without batteries. The main component is a 15mm x 3.4mm x 2mm rectangle with two nitinol wire loops on each side that extend the length of the device to 4.5cm. Nitinol is a metal alloy of nickel & titanium that exhibits shape memory and superelasticity. Nitinol is commonly used for stents and other medical devices as it is biocompatible and folds up nicely in a tiny catheter before being deployed in the body where it expands to its full size and shape. This anchors the device in the distal pulmonary artery.

 

Its theory of operation is exceedingly simple in terms of design. It consists of a three dimensional coil of wire and two metal plates on two wafers of fused silica encased in silicone. The coil is produced through electrodeposition of gold onto a silica wafer in a vacuum chamber. Fusion bonding is used to join the silica wafers. The coil of wire forms an inductor and the two metal plates act as a capacitor in physics & electronics terms. This arrangement connected in a parallel loop forms a resonant LC circuit (L=inductance, C=capacitance). Depending on the capacitance and inductance of the components, the circuit will oscillate at a perferred resonant frequency. The capacitor in the CardioMEMS is exposed and very thin allowing the silica crystal and metal plates to deform with changes in pressure from the blood within the pulmonary artery. Changing the distance between metal plates of a capacitor changes its capacitance value thereby changing the devices resonant frequency. An external machine can ping and excite the coil with various electromagnetic radio frequencies until it is able to find its resonant frequency. By working backwards, the measured frequency can be converted into an estimated capacitance which can be correlated to an estimated pressure measurement.

 

The device is placed during the right heart catheterization (RHC) procedure when the physician threads catheters from a patient's veins through the right atria, past the tricuspid valve, through the right ventricle, and finally past the pulmonary valve into the pulmonary artery. Fluoroscopy or video x-rays along with radiopaque contrast are used to visualize the blood vessels and guide the catheters to their destination. During the RHC, the cardiologist will use a Swan-Ganz catheter to measure the actual pressure and calibrate the device's measured pressures to actual pressures.

Too much capacitance, 10nF instead of 100pF.

ATX 12V power input chip current limit was tripping at power up, the large amount capacitance on the board was causing the issue. Fortunately, I left open a couple footprints on the power mosfet gate for an RC network, allowing a soft start.

Added 68nF capacitors in parallel with feedback resistors to reduce the amplitude of LFOs at higher frequencies. This gives a more constant modulation depth as the LFO frequency is increased.

 

I removed the two 10uF capacitors on the audio output lines. You can see four holes near the output sockets where they were. I then added 470R series resistors (not seen in this photo) to the output of the final op-amps. Although this does increase output offset slightly it is still below 10mV. The resistors prevent the output op-amp from oscillating with cable capacitance. Remember I have no HPF stage on my unit and the output of the summing amplifier goes straight to the relay.

Small switch on the power cable to add 10 ohm in series while the ATU is searching the right inductance and capacitance.

I found later that short circuit gave lower numbers. I suspect this is because it's easier to make a good short than an open without stray capacitance.

Couple of 120pF disc ceramics added to prove that the problem is due to capacitance on the data and clock signals. Original 10nF ceramic caps just visible in front of the PCB.
