Monet painted four similar versions of this view of Antibes from the Salis gardens at Cap d'Antibes. For each canvas he introduced slight variations in size and perspective, but the key difference is in the moment he chose for depicting the locale. In fact he represented it at various times in the course of a day, attempting to 'paint it in several ways'. In this case the dawn light infuses the landscape: 'It is so clear, such a pure pink and blue colour that the slightest imperfect brushstroke seems filthy.' The views of Antibes once more indicate that Monet's work was moving in the direction of variations on the same theme or motif.
