Taken on 06 May 2018 in Netherlands around Canoe-Bos (Oud-Zuid, Amsterdam, Netherlands) (20180506-VID_20180506_140329)

These are Grumman Freighter canoes on the Matthews River in northern Alaska, U.S.A. They have a stern designed to put a small motor for propulsion.

The motors were removed for 'long lining' up this river. Some places were side and very shallow.

This area has steep canyons with several abrupt right angle turns. Going down stream with dangerous narrow water running straight into the cliff face makes it difficult.

I estimate the canyon length at about 1/2 -3/4 mile.

Going upstream with 'long lines' is also a trick.

The water really is translucent so the color is coming from the rocks below.

Perhaps rich in copper?

Photography by Abby Powell.

A 10-15 minute trek out of Rose Harbour (along some very muddy forest paths!) will lead you to this canoe blank, abandoned by its carvers generations ago and left to return to the forest.

There was a seriously pink sunset going on - you can see its reflection. The curves of these canoes made me think of dolphins swimming in close formation.

Canoeing in Peru.

This lake in the protected Eco Amazonia was filled with Anaconda and Piranha. I was quite nervous.

Canoes seem to make it over Presbyterian Falls successfully much more often than kayaks. The higher gunwhales and boat length help alot. It also helps to have a boat that is not full of water. The operation you see in this picture can be witnessed a thousand times any Saturday at this spot.
