The colours of the river come only partly from the Macarenia clavigera, for the most part they come from algae (green sometimes verging on blue), sedimentary rock (yellow-red), sand (white-yellow) and internal reflections within the water. The river is in full splendour when the sun is shining, and in the Sierra de la Macarena, one can get temperatures into the 40's according to the guide. Add to that the restriction of no sunscreen/repellents (due to potential damage to the Macarenia plant) and you have a recipe for discomfort. Fortunately deep pools create natural swimming holes which are taken full advantage of.

my traveling companion noticed the towers from the main highway, so we backtracked to this quirky little wayside place in bewilderment.
apparently we weren't alone: many a tourist has made his way here (on purpose!!) to view what's gotta be one of the weirdest religious grottos in the mountain west.

A picture from this fall... I am trying to learn to love color. The "castle" is on a semi rural street in semi-rural Antonito Colorado. It is clearly a bit above and beyond the normal places in the neighborhood.
