"I spy with my little drone"... playful with sinister overtones kind of embodies La Macarena. A former hotbed of FARC activity, a large military presence is a reminder of former unrest. Not so long ago, the area was completely off limits, and one was at significant risk of kidnapping or worse. Now, one can stroll the streets at night with one's camera dangling about one's neck, as one does in an unfamiliar neighbourhood at 1 in the morning, without cause for concern.
Now a thriving tourist destination, drone activity is restricted within the national park (without the proper permissions, which need to be secured 10 days in advance).
Fortunately Cano Canoas had no such restrictions and as such represented a destination with a freer personal mandate. Groups are also less regulated, and one is more free to follow one's own itinerary. I just wish that I'd brought along my macro equipment, since the area represents a confluence of different ecological environments, Sierra, and Amazon, which is a typical identifier for species richness.
